Two holiday lets sleeping 2 and 2The Lodge and the The Forge are situated in the heart of the pretty Devonshire village of Buckland Monachorum on the western edge of Dartmoor and within the Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Perfect for two, these charming cottages are tastefully and comfortably furnished and are ideally located for exploring the best of West Devon and Dartmoor.
In the grounds of Bedford Cottage, The Lodge has been newly built out of local stone and slate to provide a detached, single-storey holiday cottage.
The living room is open plan with a comfy sitting area with 2 sofas and log effect stove at one end and a well equipped kitchen at the other. The bedroom has 2 zip and link beds which can be used as a superking double or as 2 singles. The bedroom leads into the ensuite shower room.
The name affirms its history ... this attractive cottage adjoins the owner's property and boasts plenty of character features including a vaulted ceiling and exposed beams. The sitting room is beautifully light and has a gas log-effect stove to keep things cosy. Downstairs you will also find a galley-style kitchen and the bathroom with bath and shower over.
Steep stairs take you to the delightful galleried bedroom, with a double bed and again, a lovely vaulted ceiling with exposed beams.
Both properties have shared use of the garden – The Lodge also has a patio area. They benefit from full central heating and each has a LED flat screen TV (Freeserve & DVD) and WiFi. The cottages also offer off-road parking.
Buckland Monachorum has a wonderful C16th pub, The Drake Manor, which offers food and a great range of ale, wines, whiskies and of course, cider! On the edge of the village lies The Garden House, once the village vicarage, now a charitable Trust with 10 acres of exquisite gardens. Discover the romantic walled garden with 16th century ruins, cottage gardens and flowering meadows. (Open March – November)
The wild beauty of Dartmoor is yours to explore, including numerous circular walks straight from the door of both properties, but the wooded valleys of the Tavy and Tamar also have much to tempt. Now a tranquil, scenic landscape, the area has a long and rich industrial past stretching over centuries – copper, lead, silver and arsenic have all been mined here. On many a walk you will find the crumbling stone remains of the old Wheals. Morwellham Quay – now a living history museum, gives a fascinating insight to life in a Victorian mining village. The ancient stannary town of Tavistock is just 6 miles away and a visit to its award winning Pannier Market is a must!
Buckland Abbey, built by the Cistercians and once home of Sir Francis Drake, is just a mile from the cottages and sits in a glorious estate with plenty of walks. Cotehele a tudor gem, Saltram, Antony House and Mount Edgcumbe Country Park are all within 15 miles.
Further afield, the beaches of South Devon and Cornwall are an easy drive. The nearest beach, Wembury, a pretty beach with plenty of rockpools and sand for sunbathing is a little under 40 minutes away. The beaches of North Cornwall can be reached in about an hour.
