Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur is the region of south eastern France bordered by the Mediterranean coast, the principality of Monaco and Italy. Consisting of six departments to the north bounded by Rhône-Alpes, and to the west by Languedoc-Roussillon, with the mighty River Rhône marking its westernmost border. The six regional departments are: Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, Hautes-Alpes, Alpes-Maritimes, Bouches-du-Rhône, Var and Vaucluse. Economically the region is the third most important in France after Île-de-France and Rhône-Alpes. Prime property here may require a Euro Millions jackpot for the majority, but it’s possible to holiday like a film star on a modest budget in your own self catering accommodation.
Clichés abound, the lavender fields of Provence, synonymous with Peter Mayle and his classic book “A Year in Provence”, the memoir of his first year living and working in Provence published in 1989 that spearheaded the modern travel and live/work abroad genre. The Rhone forms the Western border, and divides at Romanesque Arles.
The Carmargue is technically an island, a salt water marsh forming the largest river delta in Western Europe and home to 400+ species of birds. The dramatic wild landscape is famous for elegant flamingos and indigenous white Carmargue horses, often depicted galloping through the water, less obvious are the ferocious mosquitoes. The “gardians” are Carmargue cowboys who use the horses to tend the bulls used in traditional bull fights in the area.
The Maritime Alpes naturally borders the Rhone Alpes and Italian Alps, but also contains the French Riviera. Cannes International Film Festival held usually in May, is world famous. Cannes, with its yacht marina and exclusive shopping, is worth visiting but staying away from the coastal hot spots in a private gite rental is far more relaxing.
Nice, the region’s capital and second most visited French destination after Paris, sip sophisticated cocktails and generally see and being seen. However, Nice also has fantastic art galleries, Henri Matisse loved painting here, and excellent museums, as the city is based the old Roman city of Cemenelum and is one of the earliest settlements, Nice was in Italy until 1860.
Avignon in south Provence, was home to the papacy for 100 years in the 14th century leaving Le Palais des Papes,' as an impressive legacy, the largest Gothic building in the world! Situated just half an hour from Marseille, Avignon was a city of culture in 2000. The central squares, Place du Palais and Place de L'horloge, are delightful but very expensive; the locals frequent the covered market close by in Place Pie.
We can’t leave Provence without mentioning the Provencal cuisine, based on the healthy Mediterranean diet of very fresh locally grown vegetables like aubergines and tomatoes, fish and of course olives. Provencal chicken is braised with 40 bulbs of garlic, sweet and delicious.
Finally, see and be seen on the chic Cote d’Azur, with the azurite Mediterranean Sea twinkling as a backdrop to the resorts of Cannes, Antibes, Cap Ferrat and St Tropez. Pack the sun cream, you are in the sunniest region of France living the high life, even on a last minute short break, in your holiday gite or self catering villa with pool.
