Lorraine is situated in the north east of France, the only French region to adjoin three other countries; Belgium, Luxembourg and Germany. The flat Paris Basin in the west eventually meets the scenic Vosages Mountains, a very well kept French holiday secret and so easy to reach from the UK. Obviously the Alsace Lorraine region has suffered in many military conflicts. There are many wartime memorials and museums dedicated to telling the horrific stories, including the Battle of Verdun, the lengthiest battle in history lasting from February until December 1916, with an estimated 700 000 casualties and deaths in an area of less than ten square kilometres.

The four departments are Meurthe-et-Moselle, Meuse, Moselle and Vosages, with the Moselle, Meurthe and Meuse rivers all terminating in the Rhine Basin. Self Catering in Franche-Comté, Alsace accommodation, and gites in Champagne-Ardenne are the adjacent French regions. Many delightful spa towns like Bains-les-Bains and Plombières-les-Bains are destinations in their own right, with delightful architecture and modern spas for invigorating spa breaks.

Nancy is a delightful city, often overlooked but features baroque architecture in the cathedral. Place Stanislas is a seventeenth century example of chic urban planning, linking the mediaeval old town to Charles III’s “new” town. Otherwise known as “Place Stan”, the square was renovated to it’s former glory for the 250th anniversary in 2005, with a stunning theatre, museum and art gallery.

Metz is France’s greenest city, pedestrianised with more green space per inhabitant then any other. However, the architecture is diverse from its ancient Gallo-Roman remains to the futuristic Pompidou-Metz Centre housing the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Arts, opened by the French President Nicolas Sarkozy, on May 12, 2010. The city is particularly delightful when hosting the large traditional Christmas market in Place St Louis, housed in charming wooden huts. The pervading scents of vin chaud and gingerbread compete with roasting chestnuts and a stunning Christmas light display. Metz is a perfect last minute winter break destination for the festive season. Many arts, musical and cultural festivals are held throughout the year.

Head up into the unspoiled Vosages mountains, they may be smaller than the ski chalets in the Alps further south, but advantages include; easier access, fewer crowds and reliable snow for winter sports activities like cross country skiing, downhill skiing, snowboarding and winter walking. Naturally the prices are a lot lower and ski lift queues in resorts like La Bresse Hohneck or Gérardmer far shorter. The Vosages Mountains are a great place, especially for families, to learn to ski with affordable accommodation and easy access by car from the UK. Renting a mountain chalet or renovated farmhouse is a delightful alternative to soulless apartments in the enormous alpine resorts.

Summer activities are varied, with many crystal clear rivers and lakes for swimming, canoeing, sailing and fishing. Rich with abundant wildlife including boar, deer and chamois, Lorraine is on the migratory path for many rare species and a perfect bird watching holiday destination.

Well known and delicious, Quiche Lorraine is a savoury tart made from local produce including smoked ham, eggs, cheese and cream. The local Pinot Noir wine is very acceptable, but it makes a nice change to be offered excellent local Lorraine beer with your lunch.
