Limousin is a gem, “the land of a thousand lakes” better known than in the past to us Brits, a rural idyll within easy reach of the UK and not over run with tourists. Centrally located in France and bordering the stunning regions and properties in Midi Pyrénées to the south, Self Catering in the Loire Valley to the north, holidays in Poitou Charentes, and villas in Aquitaine to the west and Auvergne gite rentals to the east. The region incorporates much of the Massif Central mountain range, and is the second least populated are after Corsica. You are always within a few miles of a glorious lake beach for swimming. Consisting of just three departments, Haute-Vienne, Creuse and Corrèze, real France is to be found in the Limousin. Communication links have opened up the area with excellent cheap flights serving Limoges in Haute-Vienne from many UK airports. Brive-la-Gaillarde airport has recently added welcome alternative routes. It’s a modest day’s drive from the UK, making a last minute break in a cottage or gite very viable when the 10 day weather forecast is smiling.
Limoges is famous for its fine porcelain, with production peaking in the 19th century and using hard paste porcelain similar to Chinese porcelain. The other traditional industry in Limousin is tapestry making. La Maison du Tapissier in Aubosson is an interesting museum charting the tapestry making tradition from the 16th century, with regular demonstrations.
Perhaps of more interest to families on holiday is Les Loups de Chabrières Wolf Park, near Guéret in Creuse, first established in 2001. Wolves died out in the area in the 1940s but this large park has allowed reintroduction of European and Canadian wolves in a controlled but free environment. The wolf park does a great job of educating us about these wildly feared predators, and allows for serious scientific study in addition.
Take your little monkeys to the popular forest climbing and adventure parks. “D’arbre en arbre” is situated between Vauveix and Broussas is a challenging yet safe adventure park for children and adults alike. There are different courses aimed at differing ages and abilities, so even the most active teens can have a challenging adventure and the tots can join in on their own course too. Another park 5 minutes from Limoges is Tarz-en-Arbre.
Stay and play in the beautifully unspoilt Correze and enjoy the Millevaches Natural Park, a high plateau where the famous Limousin cattle graze freely in summer. Criss crossed with miles of walking paths and bridleways, perfect for cycling and horse riding holidays this is the unpolluted heart of France and perfect for outdoors breaks. A variety of self catering and B and B accommodation is available, basic gites at budget prices to luxury boutique accommodation with all mod cons in this corner of paradise. It’s also very easy to access all the delights of the Northern Dordogne from an attractive base like Beaulieu sur Dordogne, actually located in the Corrèze. Beaulieu hosts an annual strawberry fair in May, and canoeing on the Dordogne is much less crowded here. There are many water sports centres and the fishing is first class. Tulle is famed for it’s lace and also being home to the only accordion factory in the whole of France!
