The Loire Valley epitomises visions of fairy tale chateaux dotted along the magnificent river Loire with vineyards stretching as far as the eye can see. The immense River Loire is the longest river in France and stretches over 1000 kilometres from Ardèche to Nantes and flows into the Atlantic at St Nazaire. The Loire defines the geography, but visitors also enjoy the stunning wines of the region and classical architecture and magnificent chateaux. The central stretch between Angers and Sully-sur-Loire was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000. The river is often the dividing line on the weather forecast, cross the Loire and the sun shines, the region is mild year round with hot summers.
Nantes is the regional capital of Pays de la Loire, covering the western stretches of the Loire Valley, a thriving technologically innovative city and port with an abundance of Nantaise chocolatiers. Many low cost airlines fly into Nantes-Atlantique Airport.
The alternative is to fly, drive or take the train (TGV) into Tours, the official home of definitive spoken French and the second city of Centre region after Orléans. Tours is an interesting city with the medieval Place Plumereau and delightful café culture flanking the river at Pont Wilson. Tours Cathedral and the botanic gardens are pleasant excursions. Lunch here may be rillons de Tours, chunks of salted pork belly preserved in fat, whereas rillettes is minced into a pâté. AOC fromages de chèvres (goat's cheeses) are also spécialités régionales.
From your conveniently located self catering holiday cottage or accommodation in the Loire, many day trips are feasible. Angers is a “must see” with a delightful mixture of medieval, art deco and art nouveau architecture. Angers Cathedral displays the 100m long Apocalypse tapestry that has been expertly renovated after being sliced up in the French Revolution!
Sancere, Chinon and Saumur are familiar destinations from wine bottle labels but delightful and manageable towns to explore in their own right. A Loire Valley Wine Tour is essential, and the cellars an escape from the heat of the summer sun. Alternatively, follow the signposted Route des Vignobles where vignerons welcome visitors enthusiastically and share their knowledge, naturally culminating in the obligatory tasting or “dégustation”.
A rewarding way to explore is by bike, on the undemanding and well signposted network of 650km cycle routes, mostly on or near the river bank and very suitable for family cycling holidays. The GR3 long distance footpath takes in many famous chateaux and can be divided into manageable day walks from your Loire vacation rental. Naturally there are many places to hire a canoe and paddle the river or take a leisurely Loire river cruise.
Upstream the châteaux become more regal including the magnificent Château Royal at Blois. Other famous chateau worth visiting are: Villandry for Renaissance gardens; Chambord for distinctive French Renaissance architecture, which blends late French Gothic and newer Italian Renaissance; Chenonceau is the ultimate fairytale castle; Château de Langeais, is a perfect example of Medieval French architecture and Cheverny for beautiful interiors, furniture, tapestries and rare objets d’art collections.
Following a last minute short break or a longer holiday you will leave your “heart” in the Loire Valley.
