SPECIAL OFFERS >The River Loire stretches inland from Ardèche to Nantes and out into the Atlantic at St Nazaire. The classical architecture and chateaux of the Loire Valley stretches along the meandering river through the Pays de la Loire. The region consists of five departments namely Loire-Atlantique (coastal), Maine-et-Loire, Mayenne, Sarthe and Vendée (coastal). Generally a low lying area, with the Atlantic lapping gently shelving child friendly sandy beaches, and many forested areas inland.
Nantes is the regional capital of Pays de la Loire and Loire Atlantique, covering the western stretches of the Loire Valley, a thriving technologically advanced city. Many low cost airlines fly into Nantes-Atlantique Airport.
The famous Le Mans 24 hour sports car race is held in Le Mans every year in June, the capital of the Sarthe region in the north. The Le Mans Classic Car race is in July. From your family gite accommodation you can paddle the Sarthe in a canoe or ride, hike or hack on horseback the extensive trails of the Perseigne forest.
Mayenne borders both Normandy gites and Brittany cottages; the slightly hillier Les Alpes Mancelles are home to sheep and fruit trees. A peaceful location for walking and mountain bike riding (MTB) or le vélo tout terrain usually abbreviated to VTT.
Stretching from La Baule in the north to La Tranche-sur-Mer in the Southern Vendée are about 200km of golden sands. La Baule’s 9km beach is rated as one of the best beaches in Europe, a 100 year old fashionable resort with elegant boutiques and excellent dining. The wide open sands are perfect for land yachting and extensive facilities for sailing dinghies, yachts and other waterspouts. Rent a gite and the whole family will be enjoy a traditional seaside holiday, it is well known that as you reach the Loire River the sunshine hours per annum climb dramatically!
The luminescent water gives the Cote de Jade its name. Enjoy a picnic in the pine and mimosa trees of the Pierre Attelée forest, unique in the Loire Atlantique. Cycle paths meander down the northern Bay of Biscay. The Cote des Monts and Saint-Jean-de-Monts offer 20km of safe sandy beaches and Cote de Lumière boasts ten family bucket and spade holiday beaches including St-Hilaire-de-Riez, St-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie and Brétignolles-sur-Mer, the latter is a fantastic surf beach.
Les Sables-d'Olonne is the most famous of the Vendée's beaches, perfect for your last minute villa holiday, a first class sailing centre which hosts The Vendée Globe (round the world) yacht race every four years. The next race departs Sunday 10/11/12! There’s plenty in the chic town to occupy everyone; golf, spas, museums, great restaurants, a casino, and a seafront promenade.
