About this property

This enchanting cottage is 200 years old and is set on the lower slopes of a mountain above the ever-popular village of Coniston. A stay at Poppy Cottage will give you the opportunity to experience the very best of both worlds - situated just a short walk away from bustling Coniston village centre and the shores of Coniston Water. However, with this dreamy cottage, set in it’s own garden, you also get total tranquility, peace and quiet. The garden itself commands stunning views of the dramatic surrounding landscape, including breathtaking views of the Old Man Mountain and the old copper mines. Plus, there are waterfalls and luscious bluebell woods right on your doorstep.

Poppy Cottage serves as a fantastic base from which to explore this vibrant village, the majesty of Coniston Water and also the wider Lake District. A narrow lane takes you to three terraced cottages, bright white against the backdrop of the fells.

Inside Poppy Cottage you will find contemporary luxury with cosy styling. The living room is open plan, with wooden beams and glossy oak floorboards. Rich brown leather mixes with cream canvas chairs. At the centre is a wooden spiral staircase.

Plush bedrooms with sleigh beds and magnificent views, one bedroom has a tiny stable door leading to the garden. The second bedroom has a fabulous freestanding roll top bath. The property feels generous throughout, including the Shaker-style kitchen lavishly equipped.

When the weather is warm, there is a large garden complete with furniture, perfect for watching the sunset after a magical day.

Nestling at the head of Coniston Water, the pretty village of Coniston is surrounded by some of the most beautiful scenery in the Lake District National Park, making it a superb base for touring, with Hawkshead, Ambleside, Windermere and Grasmere just a short drive away. Superb walking, mountain biking and climbing are available locally on Coniston Old Man and Wetherlam, and the lovely woodland trails at Grizedale Forest. For watersports enthusiasts, the quiet lake is ideal for dinghy sailing and canoeing, whilst the less active can enjoy a leisure cruise on the beautiful steam yacht 'Gondola’, or visit Brantwood, the former home of John Ruskin. Nearby attractions include the award-winning village of Hawkshead, home of the Beatrix Potter Gallery, Tarn Hows, one of the most visited beauty spots in the country and Esthwaite Water, famous for its fishing. A first class holiday location at any time of the year.

It has a beautiful garden which when the Sun shines is a lovely place to relax. However, the cottage is dark inside and poorly lit in the main sitting area. The open fire, when lit smokes badly and we gave up using it in the end. The information booklet for the cottage provided no useful information and it was a case of finding out for yourself. The kitchen whilst very nicely done out there were several things that annoyed. The knives in the block was so blunt that even butter was a challenge For them. The sharpener was next to useless and we had to go and buy a knife So we could cut safely and effectively. Markings on the oven were illegible and made using the cooker tricky. There was no way of lighting the hob rings and we had to go and buy a lighter for the purpose. The combination boiler proved unreliable and topping up system pressure was the only way to ensure it works and needs servicing. Poppy cottage has a lot of potential but his letdown by lack of information and attention to the basic needs for a comfortable holiday.

Very warm cottage with good quality kitchen equipment. slight ventilation issues with mould in downstairs shower room. We did our best but a very wet half term didn’t help with getting rid of moisture! Would definitely stay here again.

A couple of issues that definitely require attention The single bedroom smells of mildew and one of our daughters with asthma had to change rooms as it affected her breathing. Probably linked to above is the adjacent downstairs toilet/shower room which was constantly damp on the floor and toilet cistern always wet. Room smells of mildew with some black mould patches on the walls making it an unpleasant space to use especially when showering.
