About this property

Hawthorne cottage is centrally situated in the traditional village of Cotherstone in beautiful Teesdale, and within easy reach of both the North Pennines area of outstanding natural beauty and the Yorkshire Dales National Park, an ideal base for a family or couple. Like the rest of the village it is constructed of stone and slate and behind the red door it has been completely renovated to a high standard, but retaining many of the original features. You will be greeted by a warm and welcoming sitting room where you can relax and watch programmes of your choice on the smart television. Continue through to the dining room with its stone flagged floor and Inglenook fireplace, where you can curl up in a comfortable armchair in front of the log burning stove. Beyond is a modern fully equipped kitchen with patio doors leading into the sun trap garden. The ground floor shower room sports a large shower enclosure with plenty of elbow room. The stairs lead from the corner of the dining room up to 2 charmingly furnished and decorated bedrooms, a double and a twin with an upstairs shower room, again with roomy shower enclosure. Once you have settled in you can plan your holiday, if you are walkers Cotherstone is situated in the network of footpath’s extending over the whole Dale and the Tees Valley Railway walk goes from Barnard Castle to Middleton in Teesdale. Further afield is the Pennine Way and the Durham Heritage Coast and Lake District are only an hours drive away ( in opposite directions obviously). Barnard Castle has of course the castle, a great range of shops especially antique shops and don’t miss it’s Piece de resistance, the wonderful Bowes Museum with exhibits to interest all ages. Raby Castle is one of the finest medieval castles in England, still occupied by Lord and Lady Barnard and where you can take a fascinating tour and enjoy the restaurant and Deer park.

Set amongst the luscious Durham countryside on the banks of the beautiful River Tees, lies the picturesque village of Cotherstone. Home to a quintessential country pub and its very own store selling all of the essentials for a self-catering stay, visitors to the area have all their needs covered! Just a stone's throw away lies the incredible landscapes of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the Yorkshire Dales National Park, the area is filled with breath-taking scenery and exciting landmarks, all waiting to be explored. The village has easy access to Barnard Castle and Middleton-in-Teesdale, whilst Darlington and Hartlepool sit slightly further afield.

Noise and people are things she reacts to but fortunately we were out or back door shut when this happened. I appreciated the homely feel and the fire had been switched on in the lounge to welcome us. The shower rooms and kitchen were clean, modern and looked very new. Lovely cottage in a lovely village with plenty of walks from the door, no need to get in the car, but probably wasn't the best fit for us on this occasion.

This is our second visit to Hawthorne Cottage - as befire its was an excellent stay - clean and comfortable with Tea, Coffee, Milk and Biscuits provided very welcome after a long journey Cotherstone is a lovely village, plans are in place to open a community shop later in the summer but in the meantime Barnard Castle and Middketon in Teesdale are a short distance away We will be back

It was full of period character, yet very well equipped and with all necessary mod cons. The Christmas decorations and Welcome Treats were a lovely touch and much appreciated. We would certainly like to stay there again.
