About this property

About this Property

Sleeping up to 12, The Surrey Manor is a Grade I listed property that has been a dwelling for nearly 1000 years! This is your unique opportunity to stay in the UK’s oldest moated Manor House mentioned in the Domesday Book in 1086 where it was described as a royal hunting lodge, reputedly later King John's.

So much history! Through the 13th & 14th centuries the lodge was inhabited as a Medieval Hall House. In 1582 alterations to the house used some of the timbers from the Armada fleet. In the 19th century, the Royal family, including King George V and Queen Mary, visited the property and signed the windows of the dining room with a diamond ring. A signature of King George VI can also still be seen in the Master Suite! Other notable visitors to the Manor have included John Evelyn, William Morris who may have had some input on the garden design, Lord Grantley, Edward VII, Gertrude Jekyll, and also Alice Keppel. The house is split into two separate dwellings one of which is used by the family owners.

Dining areas comprise a 16th Century dining room, which can seat 16, decorated in rich colours that are reflected in the panelling reputed to come from ships of the Spanish Armada. There is also a small bar area with wine fridge. The kitchen of walnut and stainless steel is well-equipped and has a large glass dining area which overlooks the courtyard with its pond and fountain, a lovely sunny modern touch.

Living areas include the Arts and Crafts library which is comfortably furnished and well stocked with games, books and magazines, just the place for some quiet time. It overlooks the lake and the walled garden. There is a large plasma television located discreetly behind false panelling. At one end of the library is even a small study equipped with a PC and printer. The Art Deco Styled drawing room is spacious and furnished with plenty of comfortable seating. French windows open on to the gardens and the inner courtyard.

Each of the 5 bedrooms has its own distinctive style and is comfortably furnished with either a Super King size bed or twin beds, of which two can be combined with zip-and-link mattresses. There are 2 ground floor bedrooms that lead off the main living room which share a modern oak bathroom with bath, jet shower and sound system. 3 further bedrooms, each with their own individual style and character, are situated on the first floor.

Outside the extensive gardens, are set in the Victorian grounds, are fully maintained and offer the perfect escape from the stresses of day to day life. There is a large lake and feature moat surrounding the house with access to the house via wooden bridge.

There is a tennis court and heated indoor swimming pool also available during your stay.
