The South Downs National Park is an area of outstanding natural beauty, combining biodiverse landscapes including grassy chalk lands, ancient forests and coast, with a myriad of vibrant working communities steeped in history and agricultural tradition. The South Downs cover an area of over 1600 square kilometres extending from the ancient cathedral city of Winchester in Hampshire to Eastbourne and Lewes in East Sussex via Brighton, Arundel, Lewes and Chichester. The South Downs Way stretches from Winchester, the first capital of England; through to the white chalk cliffs of the Seven Sisters and Beachy Head at Eastbourne in the east, almost all of its stunning 100 mile length is peaceful and safe off-road and open to walkers, cyclists and horse riders. Flora and fauna abound on the South Downs including many birds (Grey partridge, lapwing, stonechat, linnet and skylarks), rare orchids (grey partridge, lapwing, stonechat and skylark), butterflies (adonis blue, chalkhill blue, Duke of Burgundy and silver-spotted skipper) and bats enjoying the benefit of the conservation efforts of the National Park.
