The name Bodmin is derived from the Cornish “Bod-meneghy” which can be translated as “dwelling of or by the sanctuary of monks” representing the long lasting ties between the town and the church. A cottage break in Bodmin should certainly include a walk up the Beacon Local Nature Reserve, where at the summit of the hill sits a 44-metre tall monument to Sir Walter Raleigh Gilbert, built in 1857.
