Cosy Lostwithiel Apartment sleeping up to 6 guests
This two-storey apartment is set in the heart of Lostwithiel, with plenty of cafés, pubs and the railway station just a short walk away.
This two-storey apartment is situated within an architect designed house on the site of an old heritage railway building, once a part of the Great Western Railway empire designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel. Isambard’s Retreat is named after the engineer who brought the railways to Cornwall, and occupies the top two floors of this impressively designed property, the finish of which is second to none and provides a stunning holiday home in the middle of the ancient Stannary town of Lostwithiel which spans the River Fowey. In fact, the 13th-century bridge is where you will cross the river every morning if you fancy your breakfast in one of the many excellent cafés or local bakeries.
Lostwithiel was once the capital no less of Cornwall, and is a pretty town following the river with walks and kayaking opportunities along its banks. The town is the centre of Cornwall’s antique trade and ‘slow food’ movement, meaning its teeming with antique shops, cafés, fine dining restaurants and excellent pubs serving local ales and home cooked food galore. Within 300 yards is the railway station on the main line from London to Penzance, this could mean that you can explore Cornwall by train or even use the train to get to the apartment and avoid the traffic and the parking. The branch lines enable you to get to the beaches of Looe and Newquay, and St Ives in the west. What a way to explore!
A great local walk is to Restormel Castle, a Norman stronghold built to defend the county, and is open to the public. If you are feeling fit, continue along the trails into the Lanhydrock Estate towards Respryn Bridge, another 13th-century structure right in the middle of this stunning estate. The house is a must, along with the off road cycle trails, café and bike hire. The River Fowey leading down to the town of Fowey is dotted with pretty little villages, one being Lerryn, the inspiration for Kenneth Graham’s ’Wind in the Willows,’ and as you stroll its wooded banks dotted with flowers, you can see why. Lerryn is also home to Encounter Cornwall, where you can hire kayaks and take part in a guided river trip down to Fowey.
The Duchy Nurseries, a great place to dine and buy some local fauna is nearby, as are the Lost Gardens of Heligan and The Eden Project, an absolute must for all to wonder at the sheer scale of the domes as you wander amongst tropical trees and plants from around the world. Lanhydrock Golf club, a pay and play course, is just a few miles away and is a great course. Lostwithiel has plenty to offer close by but is also a great place to base yourself for exploring this outstanding county either by car or by train. Beach 7 miles. Shop 300 yards, pub and restaurant 250 yards.
