Blake Fell Cottage sleeping up to 4 guests

A former miner’s cottage nestled in a rural setting, on the edge of the Lake District and close to Blake Fell, the nearest of the Lakeland fells.
Blake Fell Cottage sits just 3 miles to the west of the Lake District National Park in the small hamlet of Asby. Dating back to the 19th century, it was one of many such terraced cottages in the district built to house the influx of miners following the discovery of coal, iron ore, lime and sandstone in the area. Families with up to eleven children lived in these two bedroomed cottages until as recently as the 1930s. Conditions inside the cottage would have been very primitive, with the privy located at the bottom of the garden. In the second half of the 20th century, Blake Fell Cottage was purchased along with the other seven cottages for £50 and it was then that they were modernised, each with the addition of a single storey bathroom.
The original, beautiful sandstone fireplace was uncovered during further extensive renovations in the early 21st century. The deeds of the cottage require that any owner of Blake Fell Cottage must not sell alcohol, this was to ensure that there was no competition to the trade at the ’Black Cock’ public house, which was just across the road at the time. The cottage’s name sake is clearly visible from Asby to the east, sitting just inside the Lake District National Park and surrounded by Forestry Commission planting. Blake Fell is the highest of the Loweswater fells at 573m providing views from its summit as far east as the Helvellyn range, and north west to the Solway Firth and Dumfries and Galloway beyond.
There is fly fishing available just 2.4 miles away at Cogra Moss Trout Fishery, permits from £25, March to October. There are three golf courses within a 6 mile range and the nearest is Workington 5.4 miles and non members are welcome and pony trekking is available at Ennerdale 5.1 miles away. Shop 3 miles, pub 3½ miles, restaurant 8 miles.

"A lovely cosy cottage in an excellent location for exploring the Western Lakes. It is well appointed and nicely furnished throughout. A vase of flowers on arrival was a nice touch. The owner, Steph was extremely helpful and knowledgeable regarding good walks in the local area and places of interest etc...We had a really nice few days here - and the weather was beautiful !"
    Angela – 3 Nov 2018
"We had a lovely 4 night break at Blake Fell cottage, the cottage is very cosy, warm and extremely clean with everything we needed for a relaxing break. The owners and caretaker have thought of everything, on arrival we were even welcomed with flowers on the table in a vase and the caretaker came around with a pint of milk so we could have a drink after along journey. As it states in the description it is in a rural hamlet so you do need to drive to get anywhere ...Lakes, shop, pub. Thank you for letting us use your lovely cottage."

"The holiday was good. Pity one can't control the weather. House was clean and well kept, however it is rather cramped. The stairs are very narrow. The garden was just right for my little Westie."
    Kat – 2 Jun 2018
"We didn't enjoy all the rules and regulations. The neighbours were intrusive. You need a car to stay here, even for suitable dog walks which sort of defeats the objective. For the price we shouldn't have felt responsible for cleaning the property before we left. Couldn't relax properly which was a real shame."
    Christopher – 22 Apr 2018
"This is a lovely cottage in a fantastic area. It was emaculately clean and maintained very well. There was even a gate to the stairs to keep your four legged family downstairs. We had very mixed weather and the heating was excellent and we used the wood burner to cosy it up further. The garden is basic but perfect for purpose. The kitchen is well equipped and tea making supplies were provided on arrival. Upstairs the main bedroom is large and the bed was very comfortable. Long walks and a warm bed made for a very rejuvinating time. There was a fantastic information pack with everything you could want to know. The dog walking suggestions were excellent and the fishing lake is only a 5 minute drive for a lovely walk. Further afield there is Loweswater and Ennerdale with great walking, or Scafell Pike if you're feeling energetic. I've given 10's for amenities because whilst Asby is fairly remote, it's a short drive to find things you need, and the rural setting is why we booked it. There are plenty of pubs around and the information pack has loads of suggestions. All in all it was a wonderful holiday in a beautiful part of the country, and the cottage could not have provided more for the two of us and our two dogs."

"My friend and I stayed at Blake Fell cottage for the weekend and enjoyed it very much. We were lucky enough to have the sunshine during the days but still had chilly nights. Once the heating was on (and the added bonus of electric blankets) the cold wasn't a problem. We had all we needed while we were there and Steph was great at providing information about the area which was fabulous as we only had a few days away. It was perfect for two friends catching up, thanks to Steph and Gaynor."
