Alternatively, enjoy the countryside from the comfort of a traditional steam train with the famous Settle-Carlisle railway can be easily accessed from the cottage. With the Yorkshire Dales and Lake District National Parks close by, this makes for an excellent holiday base whatever the time of year.

The old market town of Kirkby Stephen lies at the foot of the Howgill Fells in the upper Eden Valley, between the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales National Parks. The traditional market town hosts a variety of shops, cafes, restaurants and pubs for every taste and budget. Despite being a corner terrace is surprisingly spacious and well furnished with comfortable beds and sofas. Spick and span throughout with a pleasantly decorated bathroom. Brilliant location being only a few minutes walk from centre of Kirkby Stephen with plenty of pubs and cafes. Whilst staying there we also visited Barnard Castle, Richmond, Windermere, Smardale Gill and Hadrians Wall - all within (at the most) an hours drive away. CONS - we were told to contact owner for key. Tried an hour before arrival (no answer), tried again a few times whilst waiting outside cottage. Owner rang back to inform us there is a key safe in the back yard. Why Sykes doesn't let you know this beforehand I don't know. Be aware the cottage is on a corner with double yellows and a zebra crossing immediately outside. We found it easy to park across the road but in busier times might not always be possible. No instructions on how to recycle. Came back one day to find no electrics at all. Found fuse box but nothing had tripped. Rang owner. Never got back to us. Figured it out. There is a key you have to insert. Other people mentioned welcome pack. Not for us. Why not invest in an electric kettle? The kettle on the gas hob takes AGES to boil and must cost more. We bought a wine glass from a charity shop and thus DOUBLED the number of wine glasses on site! Come on guys - one wine glass! Although you now have two. Despite the above would recommend as a comfortable and economical base.

Spar store almost next door is well stocked and friendly. A couple of very minor grumbles - there was no electric kettle (the hob one took a bit of getting used to) and I had to buy washing up liquid (left it for the next visitors). Lovely walks on the old railway line and beyond.

Great location, with shops pubs and local facilities just a short walk away. Some great country walks on the doorstep too.
