In Barrow in Furness there are the interesting Furness Abbey ruins and locally you can visit Walney Island, Fouley Island or one of the nearby nature reserves. Heading east along the coast you reach the vibrant tow of Ulverston with its many festivals as well as a good choice of shops, restaurants and the Laurel and Hardy Museum. Explore the southern tip of Windermere at Newby Bridge where you can catch the boats to Bowness and Ambleside or explore Duddon Valley with its many paths, some dating back to medieval monks.
