About this property

Set at an angle to Thistle Close, this imaginative conversion of an old stable block offers ground floor accommodation and features full length picture windows set within its sandstone arches. Finished to exacting standards, this is perhaps the most sheltered of the properties, featuring the pleasing outlook over the courtyard where guests can relax.

Set in the York Dales, the pretty Teesdale village of Staindrop has always been closely associated with the fortunes of nearby Raby Castle. This impressive building is open to the public and is one of the finest in England. Extended and modified over the centuries, the castle is medieval in origin and boasts a walled garden and 200-acre deer park. The village of Staindrop itself has many interesting shops, pubs and cafes, all set around its long village green. The popular market town of Barnard Castle is only five miles away and, in addition to it's famous fort, is home to the Bowes Museum and a wide selection of shops and tea-rooms. The area also offers many exceptional walking and cycling routes through the beautiful countryside.

We expected it to be a bit tired looking from the pictures but when we arrived it wasn't clean - hairs and muck in the bath, dirty bed sheets, hair in the bed sheets, filthy kitchen floor, crumbs on carpet to name but a few. We did report the dirty bathroom when we arrived and were given a spray and cloth to clean ourselves. The rest we discovered as we unpacked and settled in. Half the lightbulbs had gone leaving half kitchen in darkness for example. No locks on ground floor bed rooms - leaving children's rooms unlocked and open to fields. Bed sheets had hairs on and the twin room sheets had some sort of food or muck on it. WiFi didn't work. Long screw sticking out of cupboards in a door way which we assume was to hang a tea towel on - however not safe. Worktops falling to bits. The list goes on. We are happy to provide photos of the above. This is a shame as with more care and a bit of tlc it would be a nice cottage. Outside area was nice for the kids.

There were no notes left from the owner about the cottage. We weren’t sure how the radiators came on as the thermostat didn’t work - we had come back from a rain affected day chilled & would have liked to dry out and get warm! We also couldn’t figure out the washer / dryer , a load we had put on didn’t fully dry the clothes and when we tried the drying cycle it went back to a wash program. I even tried to Google but couldn’t find the model number. Other than that we found the cottage was very comfortable, it was well stocked in the kitchen. The bathroom has an excellent shower & the water is piping hot. The WiFi works okay but on some occasions it bwas a bit slow but I understand that as ours in our village is the same. We had a very good week and would return the next time we visit this area. Thanks to the owners.

The kids loved the play area which kept them amused for hours. We could completely chill out. We didn’t visit as much of the area as we would have liked and will have to come back again
