Heddon Valley Mill is hidden half a mile down a private track in one of Exmoor’s most beautiful valleys. The cluster of properties sit among a magical 40 acre estate of gardens, riverside walks and woods. 1 mile downstream lies the famous Hunter’s Inn, where the trail joins the South West Coastal Path and you can stroll through ancient woodland down to the sea cliffs at Heddon's Mouth.
Meadow Cottage is a charming cottage of stone and slate occupying the top floor of the historic mill. The mill was once owned by the Blackmore Family, their most famous son being the author of the popular Victorian romantic novel, 'Lorna Doone'. The cottage has an open plan kitchen/dining/sitting room area and lovely views over the garden and along the river valley. The kitchen is stocked with electric cooker, microwave, dishwasher and fridge. There is a washing machine available in patio kitchen. The lounge area has Free-view TV with a DVD and CD player. The bedroom has a king size double bed and there is a modern shower room.
Guests have shared use of the indoor swimming pool (30′ x 15′) and jacuzzi, which are situated in an adjacent building. Guests also have use of a shared patio and large garden.
The glorious landscape of the Heddon Valley was much beloved by the Romantic Poets and the valley is so deep that it just misses being designated a gorge. Between its steeps sides lie woods, meadow and the curve of the River Heddon scurrying to finish its journey to the sea. Much of the land is owned by the National Trust and there are plenty of bridleways and trails for cyclists and horse riders, as well as walkers. The Lynton & Barnstaple steam railway runs along the top of part of the valley - a 2 mile round trip from Woody Bay to Killington Lane Halt.
Parracombe is the nearest village to the cottage (1.5 miles) and it boasts a Post Office / village shop, the Fox & Goose - a traditional public house and a tennis court. Lynton and the harbour village of Lynmouth lie just 4 miles to the north with their Victorian funicular railway and spectacular sea views.
Beyond the valley Exmoor is a countryside of woods and wild moor, its dramatic coastline one of jagged cliffs plunging to the sea. Discover rocky bays, smugglers coves and breathtaking views.
North Devon offers many world class beaches including Croyde, Putsborough, Saunton and Woolacombe. They offer a range of activities from sandcastles to surfing and water-sports. The seaside town of Ilfracombe is just 9 miles away and provides plenty of retail opportunities along with a theatre and cinema.
Don’t miss a visit to the fascinating National Trust island of Lundy. This former refuge of pirates is now a haven for wildlife. Boat trips are available from Ilfracombe and Bideford.
