The School House sleeping up to 6 guests
This detached property has a rural setting but is within easy reach of the coast and its many beaches and resorts.
Nestling in the rural idyll of Coryton in West Devon, The School House is an exceptional detached property combining local history and charm with modern design to provide accommodation through three cleverly-connected segments. The original Victorian wing comprises a large drawing room with open fire and a room dedicated to reading, music and relaxing. With the large old school windows providing plenty of natural light, this room is a delight no matter the weather. Above the drawing room is a comfortable twin room with a large en-suite bathroom and shower.
The spacious kitchen inhabits the old infant’s room. Well-equipped to modern standards but complimented by the antique chairs and carved walnut table sitting opposite the Aga. This is the beating heart of the property and is an area of comfort and conversation. The main entrance leads you into the new add-on, affectionately known as ‘The Ark’. With its towering bookshelves and light, airy modern design, here you will find a relaxing drawing room and two bedrooms, one with en-suite bathroom, and a separate bathroom. The upstairs bedroom has an open mezzanine area, and is ideal as a quiet area or maybe a cheeky forty winks on the chaise longue. There are extensive gardens at The School House and the highlight is the temple with extensive views over the surrounding countryside and great for al fresco dining. The lawned terrace garden is ideal for rest and play.
Nearby Roadford Lake is a great destination for a good walk and something to eat. Dingles Steam Museum is also worth a visit during your stay. The local town of Okehampton, often referred to as ’The Gateway to Dartmoor’, has a good range of shops and local amenities. On Dartmoor, there are plenty of walks for all ages and abilities to enjoy this stunning and dramatic area, as well as some pretty villages with pubs and tea rooms.
Towards the coast there are many fine beaches and coves including Saunton, Woolacombe and Westward Ho!, whilst a trip to Lundy Island can be arranged from Bideford pier. There are numerous places of interest close by including the RHS gardens at Rosemoor, Dartington Crystal and the historic fishing village of Clovelly (National Trust). Visit the last castle to be built in England at Castle Drogo, also National Trust. For those wanting to travel a bit further, the A30 is a great link into North Cornwall and its many attractions. There is golf at Okehampton and Ashbury, or you can hire a bike and cycle the Tarka Trail at Great Torrington. Shop 4½ miles, pub 4 miles and restaurant 3 miles.
