Excellent Bassenthwaite Cottage sleeping up to 9 guests

S77126 is set in the quiet hamlet of Ruthwaite, in the beautiful northern Lake District. This semi-detached, period house has masses of character from beautiful beams and wood burners to a real Aga. A great feature of the house is the large inglenook fireplace, in the more formal living room, which was taken from the local manor house when it burnt down decades ago.
This spacious, well finished property benefits from two living rooms, as well as a large kitchen/dining room and utility room. This space allows you to make the most of your relaxing break, and is ideal both for families or groups of friends. The French doors in the dining room and living room make sure that in summer you can enjoy the large, fully enclosed gardens with views of the fells.
There are walks available right from the front door with Binsey Fell, which has a stunning viewpoint from the summit, not far away. It is only a short drive of around 20 minutes to both Keswick and Cockermouth, and only 15 minutes to Caldbeck. All three towns have a fantastic range of independent shops, pubs and restaurants to suit all tastes. Although for nights at home, the large, well equipped kitchen will make entertaining your friends and family a treat.
There is plenty to do in the area from local hills to walk, shopping in Keswick with its market and independent shops, or days of pampering at Armathwaite Hall Spa. Shop 1½ miles, pub and restaurant 1¼ miles.

"6 adults and 3 small children - had a wonderful time here. We had some cleaning issues, but these were addressed when raised. Great house with visits by a red squirrel and in a beautiful part of the Lakes. Would come again."

"Lovely cottage, great for what we needed. Beautiful area and we easily kept 6 kids ages 9 to 18 months entertained. Would have been nice to have had some wood for the fire on the first night or even tips where we could buy some from."

"We had a great week at S77126 for our family New Year Break. The house is spacious, warm, cosy, well equipped and suitable for all age groups. The Christmas hamper was a lovely gesture - thank you. We loved the log burners and cooking on the Aga. It’s in a quiet rural location and a perfect “get away from it all”, however, there is good WiFi connection if needed. Great walks from the door and nearby for all abilities from the gentle Binsey Fell to the more challenging Skiddaw. We enjoyed food at the Snooty Fox and Mae’s Tearoom (Uldale) and the Black Lion (Ireby), all within about a mile from JPH and all very welcoming. Keswick and Cockermouth are about 20 minutes drive for shopping. We did have a couple of minor issues with the house on arrival but the owner responded and resolved these quickly so it didn’t spoil our stay. Would have no hesitation in recommending the property and hope to return for another visit."

"Not a bad place at all, nice kitchen with everything you could pretty much need provided. Good game selection for kids(and big kids) and supplies in case of blackouts(I presume) it does get VERY dark there, but that does mean decent star spotting. My only complaints are that the garden is not really what I'd call inclosed(especially for a dog), and you would have to keep watch with very small children because of the small wall. Also some items of furniture are in badly need of repair, broken chair, lamp etc and although it's to be expected cellular service is very very poor, I could only get a signal at the very end of the garden, and the internet doesn't reach all the rooms. Also I would advise if you have a particulary wide car, you may struggle to get into the entrance gate."

"Loved S77126, only four of us so loads of space. Quite remote, very peaceful and beautiful surroundings. JPH is 20 minutes drive north of Keswick so in a more peaceful area than say Ambleside or Windermere, although they are both within about an hour's drive. Very comfortable, everything you need, loved the Aga and didn't want to leave. Would love to go back again one day."

"We had a wonderful week in S77126. The house is spacious and very comfortable. It is very well equipped throughout with the added bonus of lots of games and DVD's for all ages. Having two living spaces worked well - space for both generations. The kitchen was where we spent most of our time - it is large and has every utensil you can think of, not forgetting the warming aga, which is fantastic to cook on. The outside was good, with seating to catch the sun at all times of day and enough grass for the kids to kick a football around. We did learn that we probably needed to be a little bit more organised about grocery shopping due to the proximity of the nearest town. However we loved being a little bit out of the main tourist areas, so this was no hardship. Lots of walks and pubs in the local area which unfortunately we didn't get sample many. But the Kirkstile Inn in Loweswater was worth a trip especially if you walk to the lake nearby. Overall a great house, which we would all highly recommend."
