Beautiful Matterdale End Cottage sleeping up to 4 guests

S44593 is a tastefully converted Grade II listed barn situated on Blakebeck Farm just two miles from the unspoilt Lakeland village of Mungrisdale. The barn has an upside down layout with a large open plan living area on the first floor. Lovely views of the local fells and S44593 surround the barn and the owner’s sheep and lambs graze in the meadows around the cottages. Local walks from the doorstep are plentiful. Cyclists will enjoy the quiet country lanes and golfers will find Keswick Golf Course one and a half miles away. The popular bustling market town of Keswick with an abundance of interesting shops, eateries and a good leisure centre is seven and a half miles away. Stretch your legs along the edge of Derwentwater or through the Borrowdale Valley and pick up the Keswick Launch to cruise back again. Towards the south, Ullswater and Thirlmere are a short drive away and both offer spectacular scenery, challenging walks and plentiful activities. Shop, pub and restaurant 2 miles.

S44593 can be booked together with The Garth (CC112156) to accommodate up to 12 guests.

"This is a very attractive cottage, suitable for a small family. It is well equipped with most things that you will need for your holiday. It is in remote, but with excellent scenery. The owners were helpful and very friendly"
Ruth – 31 Aug 2018
"Wow! I can honestly say this is the best place we have stayed in ever! We received a gorgeous welcome pack of scones & jam with fresh flowers dotted around our cottage and even our dog got his own bed, bowl. towels & biscuit upon our arrival. We stayed at "S44593" - a two-bedroomed Grade II listed barn/cottage that feels like home with gorgeous furniture, furnishings and everything we needed was available. The cottage has that "5 star" touch and even has the extra toilet under the stairs as well as a small family bathroom. The upside down style of this place gave us views of S44593 and the fells in the open lounge/kitchen that took our breath away and it was a joy to start up the fire very low every now and then just to feel that extra cosy with a couple of lamps on - although it did get hot and I had to open all the windows and turn the fire off! We were able to walk around the farm and explore and visit the animals: sheep, 2 donkeys, several alpaca and the owners' 4 dogs and one particular day we had the privilege of watching one of the working dogs "Moss" round up all the sheep to place in the next field. Our 10 yr old son Jack was desperate to play in the games room and found a new good friend who was staying next door at "The Garth". Every day we did something different and this cottage is the perfect base for you to visit every part of the county whether it be walking, sailing, canoeing, rock-climbing, visiting places of history and going to all the National Trust venues. Keswick is about 8 miles away which is a lovely town to visit and do all your weekly shopping but since I was glad to get away somewhere totally rural, we sorted out our food shopping early on Saturday morning in this town and spent the rest of our week slowing down and unwinding to the point that on our last day we were genuinely sorry to leave. Many thanks to Judith and Mike who both went out of their way to ensure our holiday was special and left a lot of very good memories. Would I recommend this beautiful place to everyone? I would recommend this cottage to all those who respect our countryside, our hard-working farmers, the local community and Judith & Mike - they all deserve it...."

"We had a great stay at the S44593 cottage and it had everything we needed for a holiday in the lakes"
Denise – 3 Aug 2018
"If you want to get away from it all then this is the perfect place!Lovely cottage very well equipped with beautiful views. Fabulous hosts, very accomodating , and a lovely farm , my daughter fell in love with the donkeys dogs and baby alpaca. We were also able to leave our dog in the sheepdogs kennels, so we could do some activities which was brilliant. Highly recommended and I will definately go back."
MARTINE – 13 Jul 2018
"Very comfortable cottage in beautiful peaceful location. Owners friendly and helpful."
Anthony – 22 Jun 2018
"A really well laid out property, comfortable and extremely clean. Had a second toilet that we weren't expecting which was a nice surprise! Easy access from Keswick via car, easy drive and parking. Property contained all cooking equipment you could ever think of! Games room fun! Owners lovely and welcoming, even brought the alpacas round for us to see on the last day! Would definitely recommend to a friend and stay again if in the area!"
STEPHEN – 1 Jun 2018
"This is a lovely cottage in a stunning location, set just beneath Souther Fell. The cottage is organised with lounge and kitchen upstairs and the bedrooms and bathroom downstairs, this gives great views from the lounge which is open plan. We found the property very well equipped and comfortably furnished, it was nice to be welcomed with scores and homemade jam.The hosts are very friendly and welcoming and very helpful.Would have no hesitation in recommending this property."
Philip – 25 May 2018
"Superb cottage in excellent surroundings. Booked it again."
Jill – 11 May 2018
"Beautiful upside down cottage. Clean, comfortable and well equipped. Stunning location and situated in easy reach of all the northern lakes.Just two things don't make it perfect for me. One it's attached to a much larger barn and noise could be heard through the main bedroom wall. Secondly the garden cannot be accessed without going through the front door and round the side of the cottage. This is a slight inconvenience for those who bring a dog.The owners are helpful and the farm delightful especially the resident donkeys.Property to be highly recommended."
Martin – 16 Feb 2018
"What a fantastic place to stay. So much character to the property. We loved it so much, we are already planning a return visit. We were surprised that everything we needed for our stay was in hand, even the little things like iron and coffee machine"
Julia and John – 20 Oct 2017
"S44593 Cottage is one of the best Lake District cottages we've stayed in (out of 8 in total so far). It's very well equipped, extremely clean, warm and cosy. Judith and Mike are lovely hosts and the fresh scones with homemade jam a welcome treat. Our dog was very well catered for too, with a bed, towels, bowl & treats and plenty of convenient green areas for that late night pee (You may notice a less than favourable review from Mrs Hartley, dated 26th May 2017; it's all utter nonsense, please take no notice). The location is lovely and quiet, ideally located for excellent walking from the doorstep up onto Souther Fell and S44593. The Mill Inn at Mungrisdale is about a 1.5 mile walk and Keswick isn't too far to drive for grocery provisions. We are planning a return stay Spring 2019, unless our stocks of Judith's wonderful damson jam run out before then."
Anne-Marie – 29 Sep 2017
"We had a lovely stay with our little dog. The cottage was beautiful and the owners had definitely gone the extra mile with finishing touches like fresh flowers, homemade scones and doggy goodies. We really enjoyed seeing the donkeys and alpacas on the farm as well as the farm dogs wandering around.Mungrisedale is a really good spot to be for the Noerthen Lakes and there are lots of dog friendly pubs around which is always a bonus. We definitely hope to come and stay again. Thank you."
Josette – 18 Aug 2017
"Our stay in S44593 cottage was everything we expected. Rural, remote and quiet. Surrounded by farm animals and a great view over the hills. The cottage is well equipped, we even had our own washing and drying machine. We stayed here for two weeks, so we used it for sure. Judith and Mike made it a special holiday. They are there to inform you whatever you need to know. They welcome you with a lovely plate of scones with homemade jam. Judith even surprised me on my birthday!"
Clare – 4 Aug 2017
"We loved our week at S44593! Owners so helpful, accommodating and friendly. Accommodation beautiful, comfy and really well equipped. We are a couple with a 4 and 9 year old - plenty of space for us all and kids could play in the garden and games room when we weren't out and about. Location handy for main road (though you're never aware of it) so really easy to drive to Penrith/Keswisk for provisions or to other parts of the lake district. We absolutely cannot find a single fault with this wonderful place - we'd love to stay there again."
Jamie – 28 Jul 2017
"We all enjoyed our week at S44593 . The property was nicely renovated and felt comfortable. Fresh scones on arrival always go down well. There was enough room for the four of us to have our own space and not feel on top of each other. The games room was an added bonus, which kept the boys entertained for several hours in between rain showers. The owners were very welcoming and were great with the boys, showing them all the animals and around the farm. The setting is stunning with a nice round walk to Mungrisdale and back along a gated road at the foot of Souther Fell. Almost centrally located between Keswick and Penrith you have all the shops and places to visit you could hope for. Thanks Mike and Judith for a lovely relaxing stay."
Emma – 30 Jun 2017
"We found the cottage well equipped and knew we could always ask the owners who are on site if there was a concern. Dog friendly and very comfortable stay"
Rachael – 16 Jun 2017
"We had a great stay at S44593, we stayed with our 2 small children and our very excitable labrador and it was perfect with everything we needed to make our stay enjoyable. We have been to the lakes many times over the years but this accommodation was by far the best, the views were amazing and it was nice to be out of way of all the main tourist areas but it was only a short drive away if that's what you wanted. We used the kennels offered for our dog on 2 occasions and it was great! Although we wanted to all be on holiday together it's sometimes tricky to take the children certain places with a dog so this was a great advantage and he seemed more than happy chilling out with the owners dog watching the world go by. Fantastic stay and would definitely recommend. Thank you"
Vanessa – 9 Jun 2017
"S44593 is the best holiday cottage we have stayed in. The kitchen is extremly well equiped with good quality equipment including a coffee percolator, plenty of pots and pans and crockery. The living area was very comfortable and the bedrooms roomy. As the living area is upstairs the view is spendid. The garden was plenty big enough for us and our dog. (I was a bit worried that our dog, a terrier, would get through the fence at the bottom of the garden but he didn't). Judith was very welcoming on our arrival and was always around if we had any questions. She makes wonderful jam (you get a jar with scones and butter when you arrive) and supplies delicious eggs from the hens. We enjoyed it so much we have booked the bigger cottage next door for September to enjoy with family. Cannot recommend the cottage highly enough."
Mrs Hartley – 26 May 2017
"This property was advertised as dog friendly, but really wasn't. You can't access the garden directly from the property and the owner, who was onsite, made it clear that dogs were just 'tolerated', based on a bad experience with one owner. Comments were also made about us walking on public rights of way through local fields. We were left with a feeling of being constantly monitored. The property itself was quite quaint, but really small and some of the kitchen equipment seemed really cheap and low quality. We suggest it's only suitable for a couple with small children. The farm animals were lovely to see, especially the alpacas and llamas, but in general, we felt this was one of the least welcoming and comfortable properties we have stayed in over the last 18 years."
Seonaid – 21 Apr 2017
"What a lovely holiday home, we would definitely recommend staying here. Fab location only a short drive from Keswick which is a lovely town. Cottage itself is lovely and it had everything we needed. Very clean and comfortable. Lovely views and accommodating owners. Scones and jam were a lovely welcome along with the thoughtful welcome pack for our dog. Our highlight was on our final morning when our daughter got to feed some of the lambs (in particular one of the little black lambs that she had become besotted with!). Thank you for a lovely stay!"
David
"Accommodation and location perfect for our purposes."
Caroline & Bob
"Lovely holiday. Cottage was very well equipped and very comfy. Judith & Mike are so welcoming and the scones, homemade jam, milk, tea etc. we're so appreciated. Also, treats for our dog! So considerate. Have been to Lake District many times but the first time a S44593. Will not be the last. Many thanks."
Julie
"Property was excellent in many ways except for wifi! Owner explained a brand new system installed in April 2016 which basically did not work very well! We did not have wifi or a phone signal for over half the week which was frustrating at times, we reported it but nothing could be done apparently, it was 'the hills'!The actual apartment was super, warm, excellent facilities, comfortable bed but us city dwellers need our internet and lines of communication!"
Jacqui
"We have been coming to the Lakes now for about thirty years and S44593 is the best cottage we have stayed in by far. The owners are extremely welcoming, friendly and helpful. The enclosed garden was invaluable for us and our dog, within a lovely setting. The bed was super comfortable. We will definitely be returning in the future."
Steve
"This is an all round fantastic cottage, rustic and remote but well equipped with everything you would ever need and tasteful and modern furniture. We went with 2 babies and a dog and the cottage was perfect for a family and would be spacious for a couple. We enjoyed good walking both from the doorstep and with a short drive. The hosts were welcoming, accommodating - nothing seemed to be too much trouble. We will be looking to rebook soon!"
Doreen
"Judith and Mike were very welcoming and we were very impressed with the Cottage. We know the area and were visiting our son and family but still had time for walks and visiting new places. Lots of information if you were new to the area."

"Brilliant place to stay, well equipped. Wet comfortable owners helpful and friendly. Would recommend very strongly."
Sarah
"We had a fantastic holiday in this cottage. The kitchen was very well equipped with everything you could possibly need and more. It is beautiful inside and has amazing views from the windows and garden. The location was perfect for us, easy access to the rest of the Lake District but also close to Penrith for shops and attractions for 2 young children. The owners were very friendly, helpful and a good source of information. Would highly recommend."
Kirsty
"Amazing views all around and very welcoming owners. We arrived to homemade jam and scones and a clean and very well equipped house. The upside down lay out is great as you can sit and see the views as you start your day and also as you relax at the end of the day. Or the enclosed private garden is another place to relax and enjoy the views after a day exploring. The house had more than enough space for all of us and our big dog, and the kitchen was equipped with all the things we needed to cook. Even though we tried not to do too much of that. The bathroom and extra toilet were clean and the bedrooms were spacious and cosy with feather quilts. This is the first time we have stayed in a property adjacent to the owners and we have always been sceptical of doing so. But the owners were on hand when we needed them as we had to find a local vet. But other than that they aloud us to enjoy our stay. It was great to have the games room to entertain our 10 year old at the end of the day and he enjoyed the ping pong table a lot. We would definately recommend S44593 to our friends and family as a great place to stay and we would return."
Christopher
"Everything was brilliant. Much more than we expected. We were very pleasantly surprised at the attention to detail. On arrival we were welcomed with scones and home-made jam, and there were fresh flowers in the living- and bed-rooms. The place was fully equipped with everything we could possibly need, and all appliances were easy to use. The location was sublime too and all-in-all we had a terrific time."
Cath
"A fantastic cottage in a beautiful farm location. It was well equipped and comfortable. The owners were very helpful and friendly . All of the animals were a delight and the donkeys and Alpaccas on site were a great source of entertainment -"
