Gorgeous Penrith Cottage sleeping up to 4 guests

This is a great property for exploring the northern Lake District and Eden Valley, with plenty of outdoor activities in the area to enjoy.
In an ideal spot for enjoying the northern Lake District, North Pennines and Eden Valley, 1 Gillbank Cottages is a well presented and comfortable end-terrace cottage, perfect for couples and families to spend time together. Decorated and furnished to a very good standard throughout, the cottage has the bonus of an enclosed garden area which comes complete with a summerhouse and is perfect for relaxing in whatever the weather.

Arriving in the small Cumbrian village of Clifton, a sign announces ’where the last battle on English soil took place in 1745’, and tales of The Battle of Clifton, Bonnie Prince Charlie and The Duke Of Cumberland abound. The heritage and history of Clifton is evident all around you. Visit Clifton Hall where the 15th-century peel tower is the sole surviving part of the manor house, plundered just before the battle, or the village church, St Cuthberts, with its 12th-century nave.

The Eden Valley is a little-known, but beautiful area of northern England, and 1 Gillbank Cottages places you perfectly to make the most of this unspoilt area. Dotted with villages, many with local fare found in wonderful farm and food shops and traditional welcoming village pubs, the Eden Valley is particularly favoured by walkers and cyclists for its well-known routes, offering outdoor enthusiasts of all abilities breathtaking scenery and a truly authentic taste of northern Cumbria.

Just a couple of miles away, guests can enjoy a visit to Lowther Castle, a popular attraction for all ages and offering something for everyone, including delightful gardens, a fabulous children’s ’hidden garden’ and a tea room. A short drive into the Lowther Valley with Haweswater beyond, offers a more rugged and natural landscape, whilst closer to home, Ullswater with its pretty lakeside villages never fails to offer picture postcard views throughout the year. The popular Cumbrian market towns of Keswick and Penrith are both within easy reach, whilst the North Pennines’ market town of Alston, one of the highest in England, is just a 45-minute drive away on the coast to coast route from Yorkshire to the Cumbrian coastal town of St Bees.

Guests looking to eat out can enjoy a visit to the award-winning local pub, a delightful, 18th-century, former coaching inn just a short stroll from the cottage. For fine dining, Cumbria does not disappoint, with four of the eight north west Michelin starred restaurants found in less than an hour’s drive away. Shop 2½ miles, pub and restaurant ¼ mile.

    Sally – 24 Aug 2018
"Loved the summerhouse. Cottage is well equipped and a home from home. Garage door was awaiting repair so had to park on the street outside as not enough room to park at back or side lane."
    Susan – 18 Aug 2018
"A lovely cottage to spend your time in Cumbria we would definitely visit again"
    Fyzee – 13 Aug 2018
"It was a nice cottage, like the well presented modern updates. Good off-street parking and garage for storing. Nice summerhouse and garden. Would have preferred a better packed kitchen with welcome pack including sugar, coffee, tea and milk. Otherwise everything was fine."
    Alison – 8 Aug 2018
"Very comfortable and well equipped.Summerhouse and garden were well used and enjoyed"
    Steve – 1 Aug 2018

    Charlie – 11 Jun 2018
"Lovely cottage, beautifully decorated. Comfortable beds, great bathroom. Friendly neighbours. Ideally located for visiting both the Lakes and the Yorkshire Dales. We were very close to Ullswater, so enjoyed a day out on the steamers. Also went to the Lakes Distillery, stopping off at the Bowder Stone and the Honister Slate mine on the way and then the Bassenthwaite Osprey viewing point on the way back. Great holiday.Recommended."
    Shelley – 3 Jun 2018
"A very well presented cottage, very clean and nicely decorated. Lovely garden area and private parking. If you drive you are only minutes away from Penrith with everything you need as far as shops pubs restaurants and takeaways. Lowther castle & gardens is 5 minutes away and was a great day out with our 8yr old and you are on the edge of the lake district so very handy for days on the lake or walks up the mountains. We had a great break and would certainly recommend 1 Gillbanks Cottage, it certainly is one of the better cottages we have stayed in and we have stayed in Cumbria and the lake district regularly over the last 10yrs or so."
    Philip – 27 Mar 2018
"We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in what is a very homely, comfortable and extremely well equipped property. We especially loved the small private garden which was perfect for taking our dog out onto and the quiet single track lane that runs alongside and behind the property. Great for walking the dog in the morning! The bathroom and kitchen are both beautifully appointed and the (front) bedroom is extremely comfortable (we didn't use the back bedroom) Light sleepers be aware that the property is on a main road and large lorries do pass occasionally. There is also a railway line behind the house but couldn't hear any trains in the front bedroom."
    Anne – 11 Feb 2018
"S89451 suited my purposes exceptionally well. It is exceptionally well furnished and equipped and extremely comfortable, even in one of the coldest weeks of the winter. The owners have gone out of their way in their detailed and helpful instructions to make sure that visitors feel able to use the cottage as their own during their stay. If there is a complaint, which is more of a need to know rather than a complaint, there was no welcome pack or any of the other things such as hand soap, condiments, tea and coffee in the house. Toilet rolls, a dishcloth and scourer and washing up liquid was provided, but visitors need to take everything else."
