An excellent base for walkers and cyclists, the area offers many footpaths as well as the coastal Cleveland Way nearby. The seaside spa town of Saltburn and the famous fishing port of Whitby are close by, as are the many delights of the North York Moors National Park.

Staithes is a peaceful fishing village, tucked away and well protected from the sea. It is a picturesque village with a small harbour draped with fishing nets. However, it has a tempestuous and fascinating past, involving great storms, tales of smugglers and pirates, of the Armada and of Captain Cook, of great fishing fleets and the enormous ironstone industry. The cottage in which Captain Cook lived when he was apprenticed in the town still stands and there is a heritage centre dedicated to his story.
