THE WINDMILL sleeping up to 10 guests

Enjoy a unique holiday in this detached windmill, built around 1800, now converted to provide comfortable spacious accommodation over 5 floors with spectacular views over the Chiltern Hills from the second floor sitting room. Used as a working windmill until 1900 and then the home of an actress and a music publisher, The Windmill, now minus its sails, is located in the historic market town of Wendover. Set in a quiet location, it has an attractive enclosed rear garden.
Nestling in a gap in the Chiltern Hills the historic, picturesque market town of Wendover has a fine array of historic buildings, restaurants, shops and pubs; it also has a traditional market every Thursday. The area is blessed with a variety of walks through some of southern England’s most enjoyable countryside; the famous Ridgeway Path runs right down Wendover High Street. At nearby Coombe Hill, the highest point in the Chilterns, visitors can enjoy excellent views over the Vale of Ayesbury and the Chequers Estate, the Prime Minister’s country home. The Windmill is 18 miles from historic Oxford with its dreaming spires and famous colleges, whilst Wendover station is a 5-minute walk from The Windmill giving easy access to guests wanting a day in the capital city of London. Also conveniently located to visit Whipsnade Zoo and the Roald Dahl Museum. Shop 300 yards, pub 200 yards.

Entrance hall. Dining room/well-equipped kitchen with breakfast area, TV and slate floor. Separate toilet. First floor: Double bedroom. Beamed twin bedroom with wooden floor. Wet room with toilet. Second floor: Spacious beamed living room with wooden floor. Third floor: Single bedroom with additional single pull-out bed (for +1) and fully-tiled en-suite bathroom with over-bath shower and toilet. Bridget – 11 Dec 2017
"An interesting building: a pity one couldn't get to the top floor. The only serious downside is the lack of adequate cooking facilities, as a single oven for 10 guests is insufficient."
    Joanna – 13 Nov 2017
"The windmill was great. The location is perfect, the owners were very helpful and it was perfect for our weekend away. I would be more than happy to rebook it for another weekend and definitely recommend it to others"

"Excellent stay. Only downside was the BBQ but we got in some disposables. Definitely heading your way again. Just an fyi for future guests, there are 3 twins and 2 doubles. Absolutely loved it, will book again."

"A lovely family break in great accommodation!"
"Had a lovely family break away. Would definitely go back here. Owner very helpful as well."
    "My third visit"
"Had a lovely weekend with family in this great building. Very comfortable and well equipped, tastefully furnished to a high standard. Plan to return again. Thanks to the owner for her hospitality."
"Beautiful property renovated incredibly, if you want character with comfort stay here!"
"This holiday was to celebrate a 70th birthday with family, Granny, children and 2 grandchildren. Staying in a windmill was a new experience for all of us and we were delighted with the beautiful windmill. It's layout was perfect for us and we were very impressed with the beautiful building and the cosy, welcoming atmosphere of the house. We were greeted by Mrs Griffin and were grateful for the thoughtful gift of wine, tea, milk and fresh flowers."
"Fabulous. Three generations including baby and dog celebrating a big birthday, can't wait for an excuse to go back!"
"We struck gold with the Windmill, it's such a beautiful house. It's been converted in the most sympathetic way to maximise space. It's confortable and had everything we could have needed. We loved it and would certainly return."
"We enjoyed a lovely family weekend in The Windmill. Our party was 9 adults and 2 babies but we did not feel cramped at all. On the first night we cooked for ourselves in the very well equipped kitchen. We could not think of anything essential which was not supplied but there were many non-essential items provided which helped to make the weekend that little bit extra special. We all loved it.The location was also ideal for accessing pubs, restaurants, the countryside and many tourist attractions. We were particularly impressed with the Budgen in the High Street, The Red Lion Wendover Woods and The Chiltern Brewery tour."
"A wonderful property. Very well equipped and furnished. The challenging room layouts compromised our comfort a little but staying in a windmill was a great experience. Sadly the last two days of our stay were spoiled by a broken boiler so no heat or hot water (the immersion wasn't working either) and this caused a real problem."
"Had a brilliant weekend. Windmill was very comfortable and suited our group perfectly, great that it was within walking distance of Wendover and local walks."
"Brilliant and unique holiday cottage. Bit surrounded now by the town, but it is a lovely town with lots of cafes and pubs. Very comortable and well set up flat. Lots of stairs :)"
"Very comfortable, well equipped accommodation, properly suited for ten adults, though we were only eight - no bunk beds etc. Ample parking. An interesting place to stay; although large it felt very homely. We particularly enjoyed some of the many woodland walks in the area. We would love to stay there again sometime, health and fitness permitting."
"Probably the best holiday rental we've ever had, out of a great number"
"Absolutely delightful building in an excellent location. If you like a variety of eating out and some local walks without the need to use the car, whilst staying in a memorable property, this is ideal. Very good garden which is also very private. On the minus side, things could have been a bit cleaner in the kitchen and there were minor things such as the large cafetiere being broken, two important kitchen light bulbs above the cooker that were out that we had to deal with and the plug in the top-floor en suite sink did not work. These did not detract from a superb weekend, but attention could be paid to them better."
"Lovely building which was well equipped with everything we needed. Good location and lots to see and do in the area."
"A lovely place to stay, everything we needed plus some nice little touches (like the mini torches outside the bedrooms and a 'pitstop' tea and coffee mini kitchen half way up). Very clean and super little enclosed garden. Lots of stairs but that is to be expected! So you can keep fit indoors as well as out - you could spend a week in Wendover Woods walking, biking or doing Go Ape but also plenty to do in the area. Bletchley Park well worth a visit."
"We loved staying at the Windmill nothing to fault it and would very happily stay there again and recommend to friends. Everything you could ever need was catered for. It was modern, clean and comfortable. Everything was of a high standard and we enjoyed the location......lovely garden and the delights of Wendover!"
"My family and I stayed at the Windmill for a weekend to celebrate my birthday. It is a great place in an ideal location with the town and station only a walk away."

"Excellent, exactly what we wanted for a friends hen do. Quirky and well out in a gorgeous villag"
"Excellent property, very well equipped, clean and with easy pedastrian access to Wendover provided the perfect base for a family celebration."
"Absolutely fantastic unique place to stay with a lot of people. Highly recommended!"
"We had a wonderful time in this excellent location. The windmill is an exciting and interesting place to stay and it is very well equipped. The beds are super-comfortable!"
"Really lovely place. Loads of room and great facilities. Definitely recommend it and would like to stay again one day."
"A fantastic and unusual place to stay. We had a great family holiday here. Comfortable bedrooms and lots of bathrooms, and a great location in the small town of Wendover, with a good choice of restaurants and pubs in walking distance. Lots of things to do with children nearby e.g. Whipsnade Zoo and the Chinor steam railway."
"Just booked for a third time!,ideal for a group of friends."
"A fab venue for a planned girls weekend away to celebrate our 40th birthdays. A unique place set in the heart of a lovely little town."
"We had a fantastic family holiday here - a really great place, very idiosyncratic, but all in great order and very comfortable, with all mod cons."
"Staying in this unique and historical building is a memory that will stay with all of us who stayed there. We have stayed in some lovely places advertised online but this one was really ideally located not only for local amenities like shops, pubs and restaurants but also for sight seeing. Having a good local train link also meant easy access to London. Although I didn't meet the owner in person my family who did meet her on the day they arrived said she was extremely helpful and welcoming. We will definitely be returning to the Windmill in the future as it was lovely in winter so visiting in warmer seasons would no doubt be even better."
"After visiting with a group of friends - we had a fantastic weekend. There was everything you could possibly need in the kitchen etc. Bedrooms were great size - overall experience was brilliant and would definitely come back again. Liz the owner was great - met us on arrival to greet us and answered any questions we had. Would recommend."
"Beautiful and unique property, spotlessly clean and very well equipped. The windmill is in a great location just walking distance from Wendover with all the shops, pubs and restaurants easily accessible. Lovely country walks all nearby. Would definitely go to the windmill again it was great for a group of friends to stay in. Owner very friendly and helpful."
"Fantastic weekend with family and friends. Would definitely recommend."
"Lovely property. Beautifully restored. Very comfortable with great facilities. The owner was so friendly and helpful. Our visit was an excellent experience for all. The website photos don't do the windmill justice. Rooms are very spacious. We would definitely visit again."
"We go away with friends every year and this was one of our favourites. The place is fantastic, really well decorated and equipped, it felt so homely. It was so wonderful it was decorated for Christmas too. The village is so nice with lots of pubs and walks so close you don't have to get in the car! The only thing is it would have been nice to have another double bed that I thought it would be but that's only a tiny thing.Would go back for definite"
"We absolutely loved our stay at The Windmill, you will too. We'd thoroughly recommend it to all our friends"
"Very pleased with the Windmill, if anything it was better than our epectations. Felt quite homely too."
"The Windmill is a delightful place. Located within walking distance of a huge choice of restaurants, pubs, cafes and shops as well as beautiful walks.Couldn't fault it. The property was spotlessly clean, incredibly well equipped. It's different from anywhere else yet has everything you need. Can't wait to go back."
"Absolutely brilliant, warm, lovely sized rooms and beds and bathrooms were excellent, the back garden was good as we had a barbeque and it was all enclosed and very private. Couldn't fault it really. Also the proprietor Liz was lovely and very helpful."
"The Windmill is a perfect place for a family weekend located in a lovely village and close to Oxford for a great day out. Just be prepared for the stairs!"
"It was ideal for our family stay and golden wedding celebrations. The owner was friendly and helpful where she could be.The only downsides were:The microwave did not work and the owner was not able to get it fixed over the weekend also a couple of bedside lamps were faulty."
"Stunning property and location will definitely come back :)"
    Confirmed guest
"Amazing venue - everyone was in awe on arrival.Really impressed by how fully equipped it was and the amount of space available including outside.I would definitely recommend staying there. Liz was really helpful too."
"We loved the windmill. We liked the quirkiness and the set up. Plenty of bathrooms which for a group of friends was ideal. The kitchen and dining area worked really well as early breakfasters didn't wake up those on higher floors and when we had dinner we couldn't see the mess in the kitchen! The windmill was very clean. The garden looked lovely although we didn't have the weather to sit out there. Plenty of parking also made it ideal as we had 7 cars. Everyone enjoyed the visit."
"Beautiful place, had a wonderful stay, unique and exceptionally comfy!"
"This is an amazing holiday home and a truly unique experience. Our party consisted of 3 families (6 adults and 4 children) and we all adored the windmill and would thoroughly recommend a stay here.As well as having the novelty of staying in a windmill, you will find it is also furnished and decorated throughout to a high standard with lots of home comforts and a lovely garden to finish.Wendover is a very nice little town with lots of nice pubs and restaurants in lovely old buildings and all in walking distance. One night we came back and we all played sardines, which in the dark over 5 storeys was hilarious. The adults enjoyed it as much as the kids! Finally, Liz, the owner, was very helpful and friendly."
"We went away with our 5 grown up children and 2 partners and this was perfect. Beautiful and unusual with plenty of space for all. Really generous quantity of loo rolls, dishwasher tabs etc (when often we have found only enough for the first night). We will certainly go back. Wish I had discovered it earlier as would be perfect for two families.Dog had a lovely time in safe garden and lovely nearby walks.Good to be able to walk to nearby restuarants and pubs, so no need for discussion over drivers.Lounge perfect for games."
"Lovely property, well equipped and furnished. Great for our girls weekend!"
"Perfect for an all age family holiday."
"Such a lovely place to stay we would defiantly go again."
"Amazing venue, very quirky and magical! We had a thoroughly lovely stay at The windmill and look forward to staying again!"
"We had a lovely weekend at the windmill. The owner was very helpful when we arrived and the place was very clean. The location is very good with pubs, restaurants and shops all in easy walking distance. We expect we will return soon."
"Brilliant weekend away with all the family. Perfect location with plenty to do in the surrounding area. There was no need to bring a car (10 minutes walk from the train station). The windmill is querky building but very luxurious and spacious."
"We booked the Windmill for a family celebration. It was very comfortable with plenty of room for everyone (6 adults and 3 children). The kitchen was well equipped. If you are looking for somewhere a bit quirky with access to great walks, a trip to London and other attractions then this is the place for you."
"We had the most amazing time staying at the windmill. I would highly recommend to anyone! The pictures don't do it justice."
"Beautiful property in a great location lovely village setting but near big attractions such as Whipsnade Zoo and the Harry Potter studios. Really enjoyed our stay. "

"The windmill is an amazing place for a large family gathering. Very well equipped with extras like a huge box of toys and Lego, books for kids and adults, games,a keyboard, computer, internet,Sky on both TVs, a BBQ pit and cricket bats! The place has cleaning stuff and loo rolls provided and when we had a problem it was sorted straight away. close to good pubs and restaurants and a decent sized supermarket. The beds on the 3rd level are really singles which pull out, so not much space for 2 people, but still comfortable. Bathrooms excellent and lots of hot water. A good place for a get together! May 2012."

"The windmill is nicely furnished and finished to a high standard, well equipped and comfortable. We really enjoyed our stay. As you would expect accommodation is over several floors so if stairs are a problem I wouldn’t recommend. This was a lovely stay and we’re all keen to re-book. April 2012."

"The Windmill made for a wonderful long weekend! Lots of stairs though so those less ably bodied may want to take that into account. April 2012. "

"The property is excellent and very special. All utilities are there and the steps are not as steep as expected. It was very homely with a very nice lawn-garden (enclosed and therefore excellent for kids). April 2012. "

"We really enjoyed this property. We went for a weekend celebration, including home cooking. The kitchen was superbly equipped and the dining area comfortable and inviting. This really is an excellent venue for a group of friends to meet up. The owner very helpful and informative. Have to say all our friends commented on the comfort of the beds. March 2012."

"The Windmill was amazing: warm welcome, well appointed, plenty of space for 10 people - everyone was surprised by how cosy this big historic building was. We stayed for a long weekend and it was the most perfect place for a party - easy to get to by road or rail, and in a lovely town which is well served by pubs and restaurants if you want to get out in the evening. The surrounding countryside is stunning too. Dec 2011."

"This was a superb place to have our annual Christmas get together. The windmill was a beautiful setting and the local area had a great walk to burn off our Christmas dinner. The owner was very helpful and kept the windmill in very good condition. Dec 2011."

"An outstanding experience. The perfect facility for a large party. Large communal areas but also plenty of private space at a cost much less than a hotel. Excellent location for those who want to use public transport for London and to drive else where. Amersham Station 15 minutes away with large car park and a large Tesco’s on the way back. Good food available in the village. The Windmill was one of the highlights of our trip. I cannot recommend it too highly. Nov 2011. "

A place for a family holiday we would come again. Oct 2011. "

We loved its quirky features and were amazed at the spaciousness inside. We had a very comfortable week. Lots of interesting things to do in the location, and some very good walks. Oct 2011. "
