Wisteria Cottage is in the historic town of Watlington, Oxfordshire which is said to be the smallest town in England. It features in the TV series Midsomer Murders so you may already be familiar with the medieval buildings, independent shops, restaurants and the lovely deli where you can buy delicious bread and enjoy a coffee and cake. It's just a 5 minute stroll also to the local dog friendly pubs which also serve delicious home cooked food.
This is amazing walking and cycling country. The Chilterns AONB are ancient beech woods and rolling fields and in spring the woods are covered in bluebells. Visit the Aston Rowant National Nature Reserve nearby or maybe a vineyard where local wines can be sampled. Walk from the door onto The Ridgeway National Trail or the South Oxfordshire Way. Cycle the Chiltern Way or the Swans Neck. Just 6 miles away is the Thames Path too. Combine a walk along it with an exploration of Henley, Marlow or Wallingford, all very interesting towns with special characteristics. Maybe combine a stay at Wisteria Cottage with the Henley Literary Festival in early October or the Henley Regatta in June.
A trip to Oxford is a must. This is such a magical city to explore with its historic university buildings and wonderful shopping. Fine wining and dining are readily available with many famous chefs restaurants in the locality such as Michel Roux's Le Manoir aux Quat' Saisons and The Hand and Flowers at Marlow owned by Tom Kerridge.
This area is rich in NT properties too so don't forget your membership card! Waddesdon Manor, Greys Court, Clivedon and Hughendon Manor are all close by. Or travel a little further to Blenheim Palace, Windsor Castle and Hampton Court. London is even possible for a day trip. Don't forget the children! Bekenscot Model Village is just 20 minutes down the M40 and Harry Potter World is easy to drive to too.
You will love the inside of the cottage! It is really cosy with lots of character features like low ceilings(1.97m), ceiling beams (mind your head!), wall timbers, open doorways, pine doors of different sizes with Suffolk latches, a little wood burner, and it is furnished in a style to suit the ambience. However the downstairs bathroom is contemporary with pale grey porcelain tiles and glossy white decor. The bath (with power shower at one end) is slightly shorter than usual in order to accommodate the washer/dryer in a built in cupboard. The kitchen has everything you may need including a small dishwasher. The 2 bedrooms are upstairs. The larger has a double bed (1.40m) and the second one has a single one with an extendable trundle but there is little floor space. For this reason we state that the cottage is suitable for 3 adults or 2 adults and 2 children (not teenagers).
Gas fired central heating, WiFi, a SMART TV with BT channels inc BT Sport, a DVD player and plenty of DVDs, books and games for all ages will keep you warm and happy. We can provide baby equipment on request.
The outside of the cottage is charming. The gravel parking area accommodates 2 cars and a gate then leads into the enclosed garden which is a mix of lawns, flower beds and a large patio. Sit on one of the 6 chairs and enjoy a cup of tea whilst reading a book or listening to the Red Kites. Maybe have a BBQ (a traditional Weber is provided). At the back of the cottage we have a courtyard with secure cycle storage but please do advise us in advance if you would like to use this.
We are committed to reducing our environmental footprint as much as possible and have applied for an award with VisitSEEngland. We have insulated the loft, added thick linings to curtains, put thermostats on radiators, put a timing device on the bathroom towel rail, fitted low energy use appliances and light bulbs wherever possible, made car parking from a permeable material, created a garden with a compost maker, practice recycling and have created a cycle store, We endeavour to provide a locally sourced welcome pack and support local traders, services and organisations. Full details of our Sustainability and Accessibility Statements are on our website.
