    This beautifully restored, semi-detached cottage is conveniently situated on the Solway Coast Heritage Trail, and is an ideal location from which to explore this historic region of south west Scotland and enjoy the many outdoor pursuits, including mountain biking, golf, water sports and walking.
    S23735 is conveniently positioned mid-way between the popular walking and world class mountain bike areas of Mabie and Dalbeattie forests. The rest of the 7Stanes routes are within easy reach, as well as the Galloway Forest Park which is the first designated Dark Sky Park in the UK.
    Wildlife is in abundance with the rspb Mersehead nature reserve just along the coast, famous for its rare natterjack toads and barnacle geese. In the woods and fields around the cottage you may see red squirrels, roe deer and red kite. Less than 4 miles away is the championship links golf course at Southerness. Slightly further afield are several other courses offering a variety of challenges. There are numerous walks to suit everybody, from beaches, coastal footpaths, linking villages to more strenuous hill walks, each giving panoramic views across the Solway Firth to the Cumbrian Lake District to the south, the Galloway Hills to the west and, on a clear day, even a glimpse of the Isle of Man. The spectacular Solway Coast is known for its golden sand flats with shingle, rock pools, fossil beds, cliffs and caves. The old port of Carsethorn, from where thousands of people emigrated to the New World, including John Paul Jones – the founder of the American Navy, is a peaceful place to walk with your dog on the beach or relaxing in the welcoming beachside, dog-friendly pub.
    There’s no better place than Dumfries and Galloway to challenge yourself to a day’s fishing than the scenic unspoilt rivers and lochs. Nearby are several fisheries offering both fly fishing and coarse fishing. A variety of sea fish can be caught off the local beaches and boat fishing trips can be arranged locally. The warm waters of the Gulf Stream allow many exotic plants to thrive in the area and a number of gardens open to the public all year. Explore the many unspoilt villages and towns including the scenic seaside town of Kirkcudbright with its artistic heritage and Castle Douglas, the food town, which celebrates its local food and drink in June each year. The village of Kippford is a well-known sailing centre and there is also an activity centre at Loch Ken that offers either certificated courses or a day’s experience. The film set village of New Abbey, where the romantically named Sweetheart Abbey is situated, as well as a fully operating water mill and, not forgetting an award-winning tea room is worth visiting.
    S23735 was originally a traditional ‘But and Ben’ and has been tastefully converted and equipped to a very good standard. It has been designed around an open plan kitchen/living area so that everyone feels included. The living area opens on to a south-west facing, enclosed patio, where you can enjoy your coffee as you plan your day ahead. Beach 1 mile. Shop 5 miles, pub and restaurant 1 mile.

    "Lovely warm, well-equipped cottage. Great value especially as dogs went free. Very useful utility room too. There were some lovely goodies left for us but we could really have used a pint of milk instead especially as the nearest shop open was in Dalbeattie some miles away. Not sure how 6 people would manage with the amount of seating in the lounge but it was fine for the two of us. Cottage doesn't have the benefit of a view and is on the main road so I wonder if we would have felt hemmed in if the weather had been very wet. We did have a lovely week though. Thank you."

    "We were enchanted by this little cottage. The open plan living room/ kitchen was flexible for family time and gave the space a very modern feel. The bedrooms were through a door and set to the back, so it was quiet. Only downside was being right next to the road, but once the 'rush hour' had finished, the road noise was minimal, especially at night. Only a mile from the beach and the local pub, a good walk down a road, so watch out for those bends. We mostly drove for safety. There was a lovely welcome pack of local goodies ( and one for the dogs!) and the cottage was spotless with every amenity for daily living that we needed. We took our Amazon box for films in the evening, the WiFi was fine. Lots to see and do along that coast, I highly recommend the Mersehead RSPB nature reserve for good walks and a stunning coastline. I would go back to the cottage and recommend it to anyone. Lovely home away from home."

The accommodation was to high standard with a welcome pack and the cottage was well situated in a pretty area with the coast only a 15 minute walk.The patio area was well placed with the evening sun, well equipped, very clean and tidy with interesting planting and planters."

    "Lovely place, perfect in many ways. We enjoyed the location, but just be aware shops aren’t nearby. That wasn’t an issue for us - we loved the location, the house is fantastic, and the pubs that are nearby are all worth a visit. Would stay again."

    "The cottage had everything we required whilst away from home. The village was quiet and there were some lovely walks around the area that the dogs loved. The Steam Boat Inn was well worth the walk with great food and a fantastic view across the Solway Firth. Great location to explore the Solway Coast and the fantastic weather helped. Would definitely consider visiting again."
