LOCAL ATTRACTIONS:
The Peak District National Park has some of the most stunning countryside in England. Covering 500 square miles across several counties it attracts visitors from all around the world. Derbyshire is famous for it's natural beauty, from peaks and dales, to picturesque villages streams and rivers, lime stone villages and dry stone walls, which give the area so much character.
In the 1840s Matlock began its spectacular growth as a Spa Town. The realisation of benefits from water treatment on various illnesses drew the Victorians for a century to the town and made it one of the most celebrated centres of the water cure. Matlock is only a 2 minutes drive away, where supermarkets, banks and chemists etc. are available.
The ancient town of Bakewell is a 15 minute drive away, famous for its Bakewell tart, and by is also; Youlgreave which has Englands smallest house at Thimble Hall, Hartington, with its famous creamery and cheese shop, Hartington with its famous creamery and cheese shop, Ashbourne, one of Derbyshire's finest old market towns, combining a medieval street pattern and historic buildings with a wealth of high quality shops. an antique shops; Buxton with its magnificent architecture, a wealth of shops, and a thriving arts scene with its world-famous spa water; and many quaint villages such as Ashford-in-the-Water with a beautiful photographic 'sheepwash' bridge spanning the River Wye.
GOOD PLACES TO VISIT:
Time and time again, my guests comment in the guest book about the great location the apartment is in, for the many things to do, and places to visit.
There are a wealth of historic houses to visit, including Chatsworth and Haddon Hall. Alton Towers is close by and the childrens theme park Gullivers kingdom is only a 5 minutes drive away. So too is The Heights of Abraham, a cable car that allows you to see stunning views of the Peaks from above, and the spectacular underground show caves.
You can also visit the largest natural cave entrance in the British Isles and adventure deep into the spectacular, ancient underground wonderland. See the Blue John Stone in the only place in the world, where it naturally occurs and enter the inner world of the underground cave system by boat and absorb the atmosphere as a watery silence echoes all around you.
Anyone wishing for a more active day out can visit Carsington Water, a local centre for outdoor activities - sailing, canoeing, kayaking, and there are many opportunities for walking and cycling around the reservoir and the surrounding villages. Cycle hire is available too. There is also a visitors centre and for young children there is a children's playground.
The highly popular Tissington Trail, which runs for 17 miles, is used by walkers, cyclists and horse riders, is close by, as are two further trails, the High Peak Trail and the Manifold Valley Trail. These three tracks are ideal for family cycling as is the network of quiet minor roads, which can be accessed at numerous points along the trails. These former railway lines have much else to offer, not least quality views, but also interesting viaducts, steam beam engines and other remnants of the past.
The area really has something for everyone.
*****ANNUAL EVENTS*****
There are hundreds of events throughout the year; Bakewell Country Show, Chatsworth Country Fair, carnivals, village well dressing, Ashbourne Highland Gathering event where Scotland, its culture, traditions and sports come to Ashbourne Visit Castleton for a beautifully decorated CHRISTMAS village and Chatsworth House is beautifully decorated in its festive finery.
***FEBRUARY***
***ROYAL SHROVETIDE FOOTBALL (annual) Ashbourne
This ancient English tradition has very little to do with the beautiful game. Despite safety concerns, every year Ashbourne town centre is boarded up and two teams prepare to do battle for the Royal Shrovetide Football...
There are very few rules for the Royal Shrovetide Football, no real boundaries and the two goal posts, one at Sturton Mill, the other at Clifton Mill, are three miles apart. The two sides are made up of those that live north of Henmore Brook, called the Uppards, and those who live south of it, known as the Down`ards. In reality anyone crazy enough can join in. While there is actually a ball (made of leather and cork), it's rarely kicked. Mostly it's hugged by a scrum and moved forward with brute force and determination. The ball inevitably ends up in Henmore Brook at one time or another and the players invariably follow, regardless of the freezing soaking they receive.
The Royal Shrovetide Football game starts around 2pm, with a ball being "turned up" at Shaw Croft by a local dignitary. If a goal is scored before 5pm, the scorers get to keep the ball and a new one is turned up again at Shaw Croft. Play beyond midnight is not allowed and the game usually finishes around 10pm, with enough time to make it to the pub to celebrate before doing it all over again the next day.

Chatsworth, stately home of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, welcomes the best riders in the country every May to compete in its International Horse Trials. Testing both rider and steed to their limits, it makes for a great day out.
Rider and horse must show their skills in the dressage competition, complete a gruelling cross-country course and demonstrate their accuracy and control in the final show-jumping event.
The best way to enjoy the event is to go along on either of the days to see the mounted riders leap five-foot brush hedges and huge timber fences. Walk beside the course and you get plenty of fresh air, some invigorating exercise and the chance to check out the northern country scene. Bring your Barbour and your green wellies.
What's more, you might even get to enjoy outdoor works of art, as every year Chatsworth commissions a notable artist to design one of the jumps. Past contributors have included Royal Academician Allen Jones.

***MATLOCK BATH ILLUMINATIONS Saturdays and Sundays from 4 September to Saturday 30 October (inclusive)..Clifftop firework displays: 2nd, 16th and 30th October 2010 at 9.00pm.
The parade of Illuminated and decorated boats takes place at 8.00pm every Saturday and Sunday during the season with a programme of entertainment in or near the bandstand in Derwent Gardens each evening, commencing at 7.00pm.
The Matlock Bath Illuminations have a long established history dating back to 1897 first held to celebrate Queen Victorias Diamond Jubilee. It was the recollections of an earlier visit to Matlock Bath, by the then Princess Victoria that inspired the Illuminations. She recalled how, when staying in Matlock Bath, she looked out of her hotel window and saw the candle lights were reflected in the River Derwent that flows through the centre of the village. The twinkling lights made a lasting impression on the young Princess.
To celebrate the Diamond Jubilee in 1897, the village was illuminated by fairy lamps and Chinese and Japanese lanterns with a torchlight procession through the village - followed by a procession of illuminated boats on the river and the limestone gorge rock face was decorated with coloured bonfires. It must have been a truly remarkable spectacle.
Today, the event still features the decorated and illuminated boats that are produced by the members of the Matlock Bath Venetian Boat Builders Association and rowed by them each Saturday and Sunday evening during the Illuminations season. The Arkwright Cup, donated by Sir Richard Arkwright in 1903, is awarded to the winning design and the Boat Parade continues to feature one candle-lit boat in the traditional Victorian style.
