Maison Des Cadres is very well located in the heart of the Pyrénées-Atlantiques region, in beautiful Aquitaine, south-west France, near Biarritz and the Spanish border.
Just a few minutes by car is the picturesque village of Ascain (4km) where you will find a small supermarket and a handful of restaurants as well as charming Basque architecture and a beautiful Roman bridge crossing La Nivelle river.
You are also within easy reach of St Jean de Luz, where you will find some wonderful golf courses, wide sandy beaches and some amazing walks along the coast and surrounding hills. Explore the pretty streets filled with shops and restaurants before heading down to the port, known for its tuna, anchovies and sardines.
Heading back inland, just beyond Ascain towards the little village of Sare (8km), take the old wooden train up to the summit of La Rhune, one of the most dominant peaks of the Pyrénées, where there are some restaurants with incredible views as well as hiking opportunities.
Indeed, this whole region offers an extended range of outdoor activities, such as walking, horse-back riding, fishing, cycling, canoeing and many others including water-sports along the coast.
It's only 25km to Biarritz where you can walk along the Grand Plage to the incredible Rocher of the Vierge peninsular or take the little Biarritz road-train along the coast. In the evenings, stroll through the town, discover St. Eugenie Square, have a drink marvelling at the little fishing port, dine in one of the numerous restaurants or simply taste a few of the specialities such as the local touron (marzipan), locally cured ham, mussels and more! From July to September you can watch games of the ball game 'chistera' often followed by traditional dances and chants.
The Basque beaches attract surfers of all categories from all over the world, but the Vieux Port in Biarritz is ideal for children and the Grand Plage in St. Jean de Luz, for debutants.
