The jewel of the English Riviera, the charming seaside town of Torquay is a delight no matter what time of year. Featuring a bustling harbour, iconic palm trees (yes, in England) and surrounded by sublime stretches of sand, this is truly a Great British beach break.

Place to stay: Boasting cheerful seaside hues, an outdoor swimming pool and a hot tub, The Purple Tree Guest House is the perfect spot to relax and unwind.

Place to eat nearby: Seeing as you're on the English Riviera, why not continue the international theme and head to Small World Tapas for a tasty supper, Spanish style!

Perched on a pretty peninsula, Llandudno is Wales' largest, most popular seaside resort, and for good reason too! Cocooned by an array of lovely sandy beaches, this is a wonderful spot for a relaxing family holiday by the seaside.

Place to eat nearby: Treat yourself to a delicious dinner at the aptly-named Indulge Restaurant, a friendly family-run spot in the heart of town.

3. Inverness

Best for: A secluded staycation

Now Inverness may not immediately spring to mind when thinking of beach holiday locations, but hear us out. Pristine white sands, crystal clear waters and rugged cliffs characterise the Highland's many beautiful beaches. You'll find some of the most gorgeous stretches of sand in the world here. Now, if only the sun would shine...

Place to stay: With stunning sea views, cosy interiors and, yep you guessed it, a luxurious hot tub, everyone will love a stay at 17 Harbour Place Hot Tub Paddle Board in the pretty coastal town of Portknockie.

Place to eat nearby: Get your fill of fresh local flavour at the Portknockie Fish & Chip Shop. Situated nearby the harbour, you can tuck into your fish N chip supper whilst watching the sunset over the beautiful bay.

4. St Ives

Best for: A splendid staycation in the south west

If you're searching for a mix of beach and culture, then St Ives is your spot. Brimming with a collection of cute cafes, quirky galleries and bustling bars, the town itself is every bit as captivating as the surrounding coastline.

Place to stay: Whilst not strictly a cottage, St Ives Harbour Hotel & Spa has to be one of the best spots in town. Boasting an indoor pool and hot tub, a sauna, crystal steam room, state-of-the-art fitness suite, this is the ideal spot for a luxurious coastal getaway.

Place to eat nearby: Looking to sample the fresh catch of the day? Head to One Fish Street and tuck into a delicious tasting menu of whatever the fishermen caught that day.

Best beaches in the UK

Being an island certainly has its perks: miles upon miles of beautiful coastline wherever you turn. The tricky part is how to pick your next holiday spot... Luckily, we've searched from top to bottom to bring you Britain's very best beaches.

1. Oddicombe Beach

Location: Torquay

Best for: Spectacular seaside views

Surrounded by beautiful beaches, you'll be spoilt for choice on a trip to Torquay. If we had to pick our favourite, we'd go for Oddicombe Beach - there's something so special about its distinctive red sandstone cliffs, shingled shores and sweet sense of seclusion.

2. West Shore Beach

Location: Llandudno

Best for: Sandy toes and spectacular sunsets

Cocooned between two award-winning beaches, Llandudno is a prime beach holiday spot. The hardest part of your holiday here will be choosing between West Shore Beach and North Shore Beach. Both are lovely, but with stunning views and fewer crowds, West Shore Beach has to be the winner for us.

3. Brora Beach

Location: Inverness Best for: Nature lovers

Offering a wild and unspoilt beauty, something rarely found on British beaches, Brora Beach is a serene and unspoilt spot. If you're lucky, you may even spot dolphins, minke whales, and seals from the shore.

4. Porthgwidden Beach

Location: St Ives

Best for: Feeling like you're in the Med

Soft white sand, azure water and plenty of sun - you'd be forgiven for forgetting you were in England during an afternoon on Porthgwidden Beach. Bursting with Mediterranean vibes (apart from the name), this gorgeous spot is just a stroll away from the centre of town.

5. Sandy Bay Beach

Location: Exmouth

Best for: A fun-filled family day

This soft, sandy stretch of shore is the perfect spot for a family afternoon out. One mile long at high tide, come low tide, Sandy Bay Beach doubles in size, reaching all the way back to Exmouth.
