Quaint Ely has a magnificent cathedral, which dates back to the 12th century, and regular tours are offered. It is a great place to potter, explore the shops and stop for a bite to eat. Don’t miss out on the Stained Glass Museum, described by locals as ‘the gem in the fens’, and history fans can explore Oliver Cromwell’s House. The Lord Protector of England lived in Ely for 10 years and the house is the only surviving former Cromwell residence other than Hampton Court, and has been recreated to show how his family would have lived in the mid 17th century.
