Situated just a short distance to the north east of Bassenthwaite Lake is the attractive village of Bassenthwaite itself. This charming settlement retains its traditional, rural feel and boasts a stream which winds through the outskirts of the village in addition to whitewashed Lakeland cottages, a well-maintained green and a real ale inn, full of character. Bassenthwaite Lake offers rolling hillside scenery and remains one of the most picturesque places in England. Points of interest nearby include Mirehouse - a grand home and gardens on the shores of the Lake - Trotters Farm, and Dodd Wood. Most of the attractions of the wider region are within easy driving distance whilst the quieter Northern Fells are almost on the doorstep. The towns of Cockermouth and Keswick and close by and both host weekly markets and a good range of other amenities.

We have been to Melbecks cottages a few times before already but usually stay in Dash. We booked Skiddaw this time for a change. As with Dash, everything we needed was provided and the open plan kitchen/dining/living space is lovely and spacious. We also really liked the large entrance hallway where we could leave coats / boots etc. My daughter really loved the piano too!! The washer dryer was not working on arrival but the owners were very helpful and this was remedied really quickly with a new machine brought in pretty much the next day. The games room at Melbecks is fantastic and there is lots of choice of books and DVDs. The grounds / gardens are beautiful and we loved the sheep trotting up to the fence to greet us in the morning. Our only minor issue was with the storage heaters which seemed to come on randomly during the day (even though output was set to zero) but then wouldnât come on in the evening when we could have done with them once or twice when it was cold. Not a big deal though and did not impact on our lovely stay.

Good location and brilliant games room. Only downside was the inadequate heating in the downstairs room for a cooler week in April. Bedrooms were warm, but we had to put extra jumpers on in the afternoons and spent the evenings under blankets on the sofas.
