Located along the Cumbrian Way and surrounded by open countryside, the pretty rural hamlet of Gawthwaite is a popular resting place for walkers to take in the peace and quiet as they sit by the little beck that runs through the hamlet. As well as the Cumbrian Way, there are plenty of other walks to be enjoyed including the Old Man of Coniston, Scafell, Elterwater and various Wainwright walks. The area is also great for cycling, with excellent mountain biking at Grizedale Forest, 10 miles away.

Carr Bank Cottage is in a rural location just under 5 miles from Ulverston, a charming, bustling town which hosts various events and festivals throughout the year. It also has a good selection of shops, supermarkets, pubs, cafés and restaurants. Other well-known places within easy reach include Coniston, 10 miles, Bowness, 16 miles, Windermere, 17 miles, and Ambleside, 18 miles. Apart from the endless walking, climbing and cycling opportunities, there are plenty of other activities to keep the whole family entertained. Families with children will enjoy a visit to South Lakes Zoo, 9 miles, and the aquarium at Newby Bridge, 10 miles. There is also the Lakeside Motor Museum and steam railway at Backbarrow, 8 miles, or you can take a ride across Coniston Water on an old Victorian steam ferry.
