Bakers Yard Cottage is a quaint property with a prime location in the heart of Grasmere, ideal for walkers and exploring the lakes. Guests appreciate the comfortable beds and the property's cleanliness upon arrival. However, some updates and maintenance are needed, particularly in the bathroom.
While some guests found the property clean upon arrival, multiple reviews mention issues with cleanliness, including mould, dirtiness, and a lack of fresh scent in bedding, leading to a lower score.
The location is highly praised for its convenience and proximity to local amenities, making it an ideal spot for visitors looking to explore Grasmere and the surrounding areas.
Guests find the beds comfortable and the cottage cosy, but the comfort is marred by issues such as a lack of parking for larger vehicles and the need for updates in the property.
The facilities are seen as dated, with particular reference to the bathroom needing an overhaul and the kitchen being described as a throwback to the 60s. The parking situation is also a significant concern for guests.
There is insufficient information to assess thoughtfulness as it pertains to gifts or welcome hampers. While one review negatively mentions the absence of a welcome hamper, it is not a consistent theme across the reviews.
The bathroom has been fully refurbished October 2024.
Resting at the heart of the charming, Lake District village of Grasmere, lies the delightful, two-bedroom, stone-built holiday home of Bakers Yard Cottage. Featuring off-road parking for one small car (please note the access is very tight), a whimsical, enclosed courtyard with outdoor seating, a superb proximity to nearby shops, pubs and the River Rothay, this wonderful property makes an idyllic base for a family of four seeking a relaxing, fuss-free stay in beautiful Cumbria.
Step into your lovely new dwelling, where you'll find two well-appointed bedrooms located on the ground-floor for you to unpack your belongings in. When you're ready, head upstairs and make yourself at home in the cottage's open-plan living area, complete with slanted ceilings with tasteful wooden beams, housing a fully-equipped kitchen, a family dining table with ample seating, and a sitting area with plush sofas and TV for when you fancy a film night in with your loved ones.
As day rolls into night, head downstairs to refresh with an indulgent bath or a rejuvenating shower before you tuck yourself in for a much-needed rest in one of the two inviting bedrooms.
After savouring your morning coffee outside in the courtyard whilst soaking in your tranquil new surroundings, slip on your shoes and head into Grasmere on foot to explore your local area.
Stock up on homely essentials at the Co-Op, sit down for a spot of tea at Heidi's Cafe, tuck into a pub lunch at the 1769 Bar & Restaurant, or even book a table at The Jumble Room or Harley's Bistro & Café Bar for when you fancy a break from cooking one evening.
Whilst you're in the village, be sure to stop by the Wordsworth Grasmere Museum, former home of the famed poet, as well as the National Trust country house of Allan Bank and Grasmere. For a day out, spend time visiting the Rydal Cave and Hall Gardens on your car journey to nearby Ambleside, where you will find the stunning Stagshaw Gardens, the Ambleside Roman Fort, The Bridge House, and the outstanding Stock Ghyll Force waterfall.
Enjoy an unforgettable stay in Cumbria by booking Bakers Yard Cottage.
Situated in the heart of the Lake District National Park is the lovely village of Grasmere, probably best known as the home of William Wordsworth, a place he once described as "The most loveliest spot that man hath found". Any visit to Grasmere needs to include The Grasmere Gingerbread shop, where the Wilson family has been making gingerbread for over 60 years. Also in the village are a number of shops, pubs, a church which dates back to the 13th century, and Grasmere Lake. Grasmere Sports takes place every August, where you can watch participants compete in a variety of sports, including Cumberland wrestling. Just five miles away is the town of Ambleside and Lake Winderemere where you will find shops, pubs, restaurants and the 17th century Bridge House, which is one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District. Cruises, boat trips and watersports can all be enjoyed on Lake Windermere, and the towns of Windermere and Keswick are also within driving distance. Grasmere is a wonderful base for your Lake District retreat.

We visit Grasmere frequently so knew where the cottage was located. There were a few pros but unfortunately more cons as listed below, not only to help the owners make improvements but also to guide future guests what to pack. The parking wasnât as issue for us. We do have a big car so we realised from the listing there was no chance weâd be able to park in the space - we parked at the car park on Red Bank Road, £40 for the week. Pros Location Comfortable beds Clean sheets Clean bath towels and plenty of them Cons No mattress protector on one of the beds Only 4 dishwasher tablets (for a weeks stay) Only two tea towels Two black bin bags Cleanliness; Cupboards were dirty on the inside and the cupboard doors sticky Top of the extractor fan dirty with cobwebs Dirty fridge seal and door Dirty dials on dishwasher Dirty crevices on the shower Shower screen is mouldy and leaks We struggled to use the Henry Hoover as all that I could find was a brush to attach to the hose. Carpet is too thick for the doors downstairs, they are very difficult to close and as a result the bottom hinge on the hall door is coming off (photo provided if required) Big damp patch on kitchen sealing (photo provided if required)
