About this property

Standing in the pretty village of Barnard Castle, next to the owner’s home, is this tranquil barn conversion, Barn House Mews. Positioned seconds away from the beautiful village green and the historic houses that surround it, this 1700s property is a welcome retreat for families and friends in any season. Upon arrival, park up in the spacious courtyard before getting to know your new home-from-home. Enter into the dining room where you can host family mealtimes, whilst there is also a utility area with washing machine, sure to come in handy when your trails take off on a muddier route. The living areas and bedrooms rest upstairs, including a sitting room with Smart TV, welcoming cosy nights on the sofa. Move round to the kitchen, offering all the home-cooking essentials when you’re not dining at a local restaurant. The master bedroom features a double bed and en-suite shower room, whilst there is also a twin and single which is perfect for children. To the outside is a shared courtyard with seating, so you can enjoy a favourite drink on a balmy evening. When you’re ready to explore, the local village of Gainford is truly unspoilt, offering a delightful village green with Georgian houses, along with amenities such as a general store, fish and chip shop and a pub where you can savour a pint and a hearty meal. There’s plenty of wonderful scenery to explore, such as spectacular waterfalls and riverside walks, whilst cycling and hiking opportunities come in abundance. Explore the dense Hamsterley Forest, the deer park at nearby Raby Castle or head to the market town of Barnard Castle and explore the cobbled streets and the Bowes Museum. Barn House Mews is a delightful escape for a group of five, whatever time of year.

Gainford, a picturesque Teesdale village, straddles the county line between North Yorkshire and South Yorkshire on the banks of the Tees. In addition to its proximity to breathtaking waterfalls, vast moorlands, and magnificent castles, the village also features a newsagent/general store, fish and chip shop, and a pub. There is also the option to eat at one of the few Michelin-starred restaurants in the area, which is conveniently located near the village. Barnard Castle, a historic town with castle ruins overlooking the town and the impressive Bowes Museum, is conveniently located nearby. This museum, fashioned after a grand chateau in the French style, houses an outstanding collection of works of art. Hexham, with its stately abbey, and Durham, with its magnificent cathedral, are also within driving distance of Gainford, as are the ruins of Egglestone Abbey and Rokeby Hall; High Force; the Cauldron's Snout; Derwent Reservoir; and Hexham. You can easily drive to Whitby and Saltburn, as well as the nearby Yorkshire Dales National Park, North York Moors, Lake District, and Northumberland National Park.

The property is well equipped with all the things you might possibly want on a holiday. Owners live in the adjacent property and are readily available for help and advice if required. Plenty of safe parking space. Although beds were very comfortable, the double bed is relatively low and - some may find it difficult to get back up again! Apart from that minor issue, the property is comfortable and was beautifully clean on arrival. It is set in an ideal location for visiting lower Teesdale. I am sure we will be back again.
