Stone Lodge is a charming Gothic gatehouse sitting at the entrance to the Combermere Abbey estate. Set in its own damson orchard and surrounded by beautiful trees, the property is a romantic getaway for two, with a large, sunny terrace.
Built in the 1830s, this charming Gothic gatehouse was designed by Morrison of Ireland. The lodge was completely restored in 2005, creating an elegant and tasteful holiday home for two. During the restoration, the original exterior stone loggia was incorporated as part of the cottage to create the hall and dining room, and the fireplace in the sitting room was enlarged to house a wood burning stove.
Parts of the original architecture are evident everywhere you look, with the stonework of the loggia painted a warm yellow and the wooden panelling painted a soft, warm shade. As guests at Stone Lodge, you are free to use all the facilities at Combermere, including the tennis courts and croquet lawn. There are plenty of walks and pathways to explore in the estate, and you’re also welcome to go fishing or swimming in the Mere.

Stone Lodge is wonderful - beautifully decorated, and very clean and tidy. Its location at the end of the drive was perfect for us, quiet and with great walks into the main part of the estate, the woodland, or a dog friendly cafe. The lodge itself has gothic features and is both unique and incredibly comfortable. It is dog friendly and the provision of a large secure garden was an added bonus. A lovely welcome hamper was also provided, full of fantastic local produce. This truly is a very special place to stay and we wouldn’t hesitate in returning.

We still await feedback regarding our experience at Stone Lodge from Rural Retreats. Location, garden and hamper all very good. We have reported Seven defects that were found. It is NOT up to paying guests to report on things that should be the responsibility of the maintenance team/housekeeper.
