Originally thatched, this thoughtfully converted, detached longbarn with local oak timbers, close to the owner’s home, has its roots in Saxon times, with a Flemish wool washing pond behind it. Still a working sheep farm, guests have an opportunity to explore the 90 acres of farmland and 50 acres of woodland, a haven for wildlife and carpets of bluebells in the springtime. The area has connections with the rspb, and you may even be lucky enough to hear a nightingale sing. This holiday property is situated 11/2 miles from the attractive, Wealden market town of Tenterden, known as the ’Jewel of the Weald’, with its weather-boarded tea shops and cottages. Tenterden also hosts a colourful Folk Festival at the beginning of October, where you can see the Morris men and women and other folk dancers take to the streets.
Take a magical ride on the Kent and East Sussex steam railway through the beautiful countryside to the medieval, moated castle at Bodiam. Sample the local, award-winning wines at Chapel Down Winery. It was widely reported that Prince William and Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge, chose the sparkling rose from here in 2011 to support British wine. Visit Sissinghurst Castle Gardens (National Trust) created by the novelist Vita Sackville West and Sir Harold Nicholson in the 1930s. Rye is a 30-minute drive, and the beaches and sand dunes at Camber are 40 minutes. There are good connections to London from Ashford, just 38 minutes to St Pancras on the high speed train for further sightseeing opportunities in the capital. Bring your passport and have lunch in Brussels or Paris via the Eurostar. Golf can also be found locally. Beach 15 miles. Shop, pub and restaurant ¾ mile.
