About this property

Chapel House is a unique stone chapel conversion situated in the picturesque village of Bampton which fans of Downton Abbey may recognise as the fictional village seen in the television series. Many delights of Oxfordshire are within easy distance including Burford, Blenheim and Oxford.

This unique, architect designed converted chapel, believed to have been constructed in around 1778 in Cotswold stone beneath a stone slate roof, retains many original features and has been finished to a high standard with a thoughtful mix of contemporary and antique furnishings. The double height living area features four original stained glass arched windows and a glass balustrade staircase to the first floor, creating a stunning open-plan space. The en-suite master bedroom family bathroom and second bedroom with zip and link twin beds, which can be converted to a double on request, provide spacious accommodation on the first floor. An attractive courtyard to the rear of the house completes this very special holiday home for four guests.

Situated in the picturesque village of Bampton, close to the Cotswolds and River Thames. Fans of Downton Abbey will recognise parts of Bampton, most notably St. Mary's Church and the library, which was used for filming outdoor scenes for the popular ITV television series. Although many amenities selling local produce can be found in Bampton, the larger city of Oxford and Witney town are in easy reach, offering an even greater selection of shops and places to eat. Kelmscott Manor, the country home of William Morris, founding member of the Arts and Crafts movement is just five miles away and welcomes visitors to enjoy the iconic interiors, gardens, gift shop and tearoom. The many delights of the Cotswolds are within a short drive including Burford, Bibury, Woodstock and magnificent Blenheim Place, to name but a few.

A really beautifully renovated property ! All the fittings anf furnishings are top notch an there is everything you need for a comfortable stay. We found the recently opened ''Fler De Lys'' restaurant in Bampton village was very good, lovely french food and kind helpful staff. We really enjoyed a day at Blenheim and another at Oxford. A great location for exploring this area of Oxfordshire and The Cotswolds. The only slight negative is the lack of outdoor space is more of a ''prayer and contemplation''area-suits the properties previous life !

What a lovely house. The conversion from the former baptist chapel has been really wisely and sensitively done.,keeping some of the original features-pews.hymn board, pillars and balcony;incorporating then in what has now bercome a practical and homely place to stay.We hae loved every minute of our holiday here, and are certainly looking forward to coming back. Some tips for future guests: (i) pubs in Bampton don't serve food, though the Fleur De Lis plans to open a french restaurant in June 2023. (ii) Chinese takeaway,un orientally called 'Mark's Kitchen',is excellent,Located by the main square in Bampton. (iii) Had very good pub meals in a) The Trout & Tadpole at Tadpole Bridge (about 4 mins drive)b) The Blue Boar at Witney(a very interesting and and medium sized town)c) The Fox on the way to Burford,d) The Blue Boar at Chipping Norton(The other pubs stop serving at lunchtime food after 2pm) e) The pub opposite The Dial House in Bourton On The Water f)The Bookbinders in the Jericho region of Oxford, also great food in the roof top area of The Westgate shopping centre in Oxford

We had a wonderful stay at Chapel House. The accommodation is simply beautiful - a fabulous conversion which is clean and well equipped, with everything we needed for two couples and a small dog. Located in a lovely village with plenty of local amenities - pubs, convenience store, a fantastic deli (don’t miss the local sausages) and a very reasonably priced, yet excellent Chinese takeaway (be warned, a meal for four would easily have fed eight) - and ideally placed to explore the Cotswolds.
