Tucked away deep in the West Sussex countryside close to the picturesque town of Arundel, this bijou lodge is a small but perfectly formed haven for a little getaway for two. Sitting next to a row of Grade II listed cottages, this self-catering cottage in the South Downs has a lovely open-plan style comprising a main living area with a zip and link super kingsize bed and a sitting/dining area with flatscreen TV, as well as a separate well-equipped kitchen area and a shower room. A large central skylight keeps the main room bright and airy and is perfect for some stargazing from the bed. A generous food hamper is also provided containing locally sourced goodies for breakfast or a picnic lunch in the Downs. Outside there is a large garden, shared with the owners, with a small secluded area reserved exclusively for guests which looks out over the fields and towards the renowned, local, 17th-century gastropub. It is possible to walk directly from the garden to the pub, just a gentle quarter mile stroll over the fields.

Nearby Arundel, with the famous castle and cathedral dominating its historic skyline, is a delightful hours’ walk along the riverbank of the wide Arun Valley plain to reach the centre of this beautiful market town. Head along the River Arun in the other direction where you can reach Amberley in a couple of hours with stunning views from the banks of this serene meandering waterway. Wepham and Burpham are reached by road from the south; any further north and you are on the Downs themselves! Burpham is an attractive village with many period properties and is a lovely place to wander through. Arundel sits between the South Downs National Park and the Sussex coastline. It is a historic market town dominated by the symbolic castle and the rising spire of the cathedral. It offers a plethora of craft and antique shops as well as restaurants and tea rooms. It’s a great place to wander and just enjoy the streets lined with Georgian and Victorian buildings. Arundel Castle is the seat of the Duke of Norfolk and is set in 40 acres of sweeping grounds and gardens. The 11th century Keep has amazing views over Arundel, the South Downs and towards the Sussex coast.

Further afield, Lavender Lodge is well placed for the coast. Climping Beach and Littlehampton’s West Beach are only a short drive away. This is a beautiful unspoilt length of beach of Special Scientific Interest. Goodwood and Fontwell racecourses are nearby holding many prestigious meetings throughout the year. You can also take advantage of the proximity of the cathedral city of Chichester with its excellent Festival Theatre.
