The seafaring town of Fowey with its literary heritage is approximately 8 miles by road but less by river.  The small pretty village of Lerryn nearby, also perched on the river, was the inspiration for ‘The Wind in The Willows’ and a walk along the riverbank is a must.  The Eden Project, Lost Gardens of Heligan and numerous National Trust properties and gardens are also close. . .
