Beer is a small fishing village settled on the south coast of Devon not far from Seaton. Offering a shingle beach backed by limestone cliffs which forms part of the historic Jurassic Coast, Beer also boasts a number of quaint cottages and stone houses resting alongside shops, cafés and pubs. Nearby is the popular Pencorama Gardens, Beer Heights Light Railway and wonderful South West Coast Path allowing visitors to explore this famous coastline.

You could only park 3 cars if you did it in tandem. There was no information about where to find trip switches if the lighting/electricity went- which it did twice. There was no information about appliances or heating. The dishwasher was broken but was replaced on the Tuesday of our stay. The 2right hand slots of the toaster didnât work. We were told that we could light the wood burning stove but there was no available dry wood that we could find. Having said all this it was an interesting old farmhouse with a quirky upstairs flush with a hot tub that worked on a slippery decking. Plenty of potential but needs improvement.

We lucked out on the weather, benefitted from the host arranging some parking in the village car park for less confident drivers (the driveway access is a little tight for larger SUVs) and enjoyed several activities within walking distance such as Pecorama and Beerâs pebble beach. Unfortunately we found cleaning to be okay but lacking in some places (stale coffee left in the cafetière, shower drain clogged, BBQ quite dirty) and for accommodation of this standard, found the lack of glasses (although plenty of plastic glasses for outside) and BBQ implements disappointing. The beds are mostly of superior quality with some excellent mattresses. Secondary glazing takes the edge off road noise at night. Blackout blinds in most locations were excellent. Wifi signal was strong thanks to a booster upstairs, but the internet connection did drop out quite often during the day - such is life in a small village, and a reminder to switch off work a bit more perhaps!

Not an enjoyable experience. The main bathroom shower was fine, which meant 10 of us using that one. My husband perservered with the downstairs shower. Also the whole of the taps on the sink downstairs moved when you went to turn it on so you had to hold the tap itself with one hand and turn it on with the other. The toilet in one of the upstairs bath rooms had an original Victorian cistern which was temperamental. The only person who mastered it was our granddaughter! Generally though we really enjoyed our stay there. The hot tub was a huge success and having 2 lounges meant if you wanted quiet time the parlour lounge was ideal leaving the larger lounge for board games etc. There was a lot of dust under the settees though!! The beds were extremely comfortable. Our 3 grandsons had the adjoining 2 twin rooms which could be accessed by the âsecret â staircase which they loved and used all the time. The kitchen was well equipped with crockery and utensils and the dish washer was a must. Not much working surfaces though. The utility area was ideal for storing bags and there was a second fridge and freezer in there which were extremely useful. The floor of the utility has been left in itâs original condition so you need to be careful when walking on it. A tumbler drier would have been useful as it was extremely difficult drying the bath and hand towels. Extra beach towels were provided to use after being in the the hot tub. Also 12 hot water bottles lined up in the utility room for use on colder stays. The patio area with the hot tub is a sun trap with plenty of chairs for everyone. A bit of a grassy slope to get to it so care is needed when the grass is damp. The village of Beer is lovely. No problem whatsoever getting down to the beach. 5 minutes stroll. We had 3 paddle boards so those using them were able to don their wet suits and walk down to the beach with the paddle boards already inflated. They were extremely careful not to inconvenience anyone else! One very wet day saw us walking up to the Beer quarry caves. We had a wonderful guide and the tour was excellent. My husband walked up to Pecorama as it opened at 10am and really enjoyed it. Lovely coastal walks from the beach in both directions. Except for the inconvenience of the showers we had a lovely family holiday, meeting up from 3 different parts of the country. Would also recommend the Beer Head Bistro. Food was excellent, hot and plenty of it. Again, walkable from the farmhouse. The fish and chips from the shop in Beer were also excellent. Woozies delicatessen is also worth a visit. Excellent produce, especially the pasties and pies as a treat. Stated there was parking for 3 cars but it was a tight squeeze for 2. However there was usually parking spaces on the road close to the property All said, we had a lovely family holiday. .
