Just a short walk from the quayside, you can explore narrow streets, little shops, old pubs and bistros bursting with local seafood, while fishing boats bob alongside the quay. A ferry crosses the estuary to the village of Instow, home to a pleasant sand and shingle beach.

Just across the estuary is Braunton Burrows (16 miles by road), a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. It’s the largest sand dune system in England, home to many rare species. Similarly, Bideford and Appledore host a plethora of independent shops, pubs, restaurants, craft shops and galleries. Visit Appledore’s excellent Maritime Museum. From Clovelly (13 miles), walk the 6 astounding miles along the coast to Hartland Point. You will never forget it, or the olde-worlde charms of this delightful property.
