Galatea near Whitby offers a unique stay with stunning sea views and a peaceful atmosphere. Guests appreciate the well-equipped cottage, cleanliness, and thoughtful touches like welcome hampers. The lack of connectivity adds to the charm for a relaxing break, though some mention minor maintenance needs.
The majority of guests found the cottage to be spotlessly clean, with only a few mentioning areas that needed attention. The overall high standard of cleanliness is evident in the reviews.
The location is consistently praised for its stunning views, proximity to Whitby, and the peacefulness of being by the sea. It's described as idyllic and perfect for those looking to get away from it all.
Guests find the cottage comfortable, with a cosy interior and all the necessary amenities. Some guests mentioned the property being warm and welcoming, although a few noted that certain areas could be cold.
While the cottage is generally well-equipped, some guests noted issues with TV reception, the need for updating in certain areas, and intermittent hot water. The lack of Wi-Fi was also a point of contention for some.
Guests often mention the welcome hamper, which adds a special touch to their stay. However, it's important to note that such gifts, while appreciated, are subject to change and not guaranteed.
In association with Trinity House, we are proud to present Galatea at Whitby Lighthouse.
This attractive cottage on the Whitby Lighthouse site has a sitting room, kitchen/dining room, double bedroom, twin bedroom, single bedroom, bathroom and shower room.
Galatea is one of two holiday cottages available at the lighthouse, which lies on the East Coast just outside Whitby and close to the North Yorkshire Moors. Also on this site is Vanguard, sleeping five guests.
The High Cliffs of the North Yorkshire coast hide a number of small ports, the most significant of which is Whitby. Captain James Cook was apprenticed to a Whitby shipowner and made the first of his voyages of discovery (1768 to 1771) in a covered Whitby built 'cat' - a small ship rigged collier renamed 'Endeavour'. Whitby's skyline is dominated by the ruins of St. Hilda's Abbey, high on Whitby's East Cliff and spreading below, a maze of alleyways and narrow streets running down to the busy quayside and harbour entrance. To the south lie the coastal villages and resorts of Scarborough, Filey and Bridlington. Inland lie the heather moorlands of the North Yorkshire Moors and, further afield, York.
Additional Information:
Children and infants welcome. Travel cot and highchair available on request.
Two well-behaved dogs welcome (small additional charge).
There is no WiFi available at Galatea and very limited mobile signal. A landline telephone is provided.
There is an internal step within the property.
Guests should be aware that the lighthouses and equipment need regular and sometimes emergency maintenance. Therefore visits by maintenance staff may occur at any time during the year. However, staff will do their best to ensure guest privacy at all times.
Guests are reminded they are renting a heritage building, therefore certain features such as steps, stairs and floor levels may not comply with that of a modern building. As such, we would advise guests to acquaint themselves with the premises on arrival and exercise caution accordingly.
Access roads to the lighthouse site are narrow with limited passing places and, dependent on the season and site, there is the possibility of overhanging vegetation due to cutting restrictions during bird breeding seasons or other environmental reasons.
A barbecue is not provided, however guests are welcome to bring their own, subject to adhering to the safety precautions set out in the arrival information.
Sorry, no fireworks, drones or remote controlled flying equipment are permitted.
Drivers with low axles should be aware that the site is approached via a farm track.
Sorry, charging of an electric car is not permitted.
