An ideal destination for active families, the local area is packed full of things to see and do. A short drive takes you to Cairnsmore of Fleet National Nature Reserve, one of the wildest areas within south-west Scotland and a site of Special Scientific Interest within the Galloway and Southern Ayrshire Biosphere. The area boasts a wide range of habitats popular with both wildlife (peregrine falcon, hen harriers and red deer) and wildlife enthusiasts alike, not to mention the hill from which the reserve takes its name – Cairnsmore of Fleet, rising 711m in elevation.

This small town is also home to Creetown Gem Rock Museum and cafe, where you can view its collection of rare and beautiful crystals from around the world.

The nearby town of Newton Stewart is heralded as the ‘gateway’ to Galloway Forest Park, a 300 square mile area of forest and hills with Dark Sky Park status. Loch Ken Activity Centre, the Galloway Red Deer Range and Bellymack Hill Red Kite Feeding Station all lie within the Forest borders and each offer fantastic family entertainment. If you prefer life on 2 wheels, nearby Kirroughtree Visitor Centre is a 7Stanes Mountain Biking mecca, with trails to suit every ability. Wigtown, Scotland’s National Book Town is only a 20 minute drive west from Creetown, as is Bladnoch Whisky Distillery and Visitor Centre.

Dumfries and Galloway as a whole is renowned for it's golden, sandy beaches. Whether you travel east or west of Creetown, a day on the coast never fails to please. Some of the most popular include Sandgreen, Carrick, Mossyard, Monreith and St Medans, Sandhead and Ardwell Bay.

The Granite House

A very comfortable and cosy house just a short walk from a very well stocked shop and there is much to do and see both in Creetown itself and the surrounding area. We arrived to find milk and wine in the fridge which we thought a very welcoming touch and Molly, the dog hadn’t been forgotten either.....treats and a toy which were much appreciated. Although we didn’t meet our hosts, the letter awaiting us made us feel very at home. All in all, to be recommended.

We were really pleased with the holiday let. It was really warm and had a great garden to let the dog out. I found it was in a good area to visit the galloway forrest.we didn't have to drive far all week. The local shop up from the house was handy to go to. The local pub did good meals and the smokery up the road did takeaways. The house had everything we needed and more.!! Would highly recommend and would use again if up in that area again.

The house was a credit to the owner but the area it was situated was not good if I knew there was nothing in the immediate area I would not have booked it only stayed one night then came home the village was a bit boring if I was honest
