Alt Ardoch is a warm and comfortable island retreat in an elevated position offering spectacular coastal and mountain scenery. This traditional Arran cottage has a lovely setting, with an abundance of flowers and shrubs and the garden seating is placed to take full advantage of the views. There are nearby pine forests that offer numerous trails for walking and cycling.
The nearby village of Lamlash provides safe anchorage for visiting yachts and the pier is a hub of activity. For a unique experience, take a small ferry over to the Holy Isle and you will discover a friendly Buddhist community, where animals roam freely, including Saanen goats and Eriskay ponies. Lamlash Bay also offers sea kayaking and powerboat trips, so you can explore the bay at your own pace. Local wildlife includes seals, often seen basking on rocks just offshore, otters, porpoises, and a variety of sea birds.
A couple of miles south of the cottage, you will find the village of Whiting Bay with a friendly, relaxed atmosphere and a useful range of small independent shops. Local amenities include Arran Art gallery with a pretty courtyard garden, a golf course, pitch & putt, and community activities throughout the season. A family-friendly forestry trail leads to the spectacular Glenashdale Falls and the prehistoric Giant’s Graves. For refreshments, Felicity’s at Bar Eden, and The Shore both offer a vibrant spot for morning coffee and a tasty bite.
FYI - there is a footpath to Lamlash and to the shore / coastal board walk that extends from Cuddy Dook to the road that the property is on. If you walk left out of the house drive, you will find this approximately a couple of hundred metres down the road on the right. We have used this regularly with children and grandparents. It significantly cuts down the walk to the town. It can be rough under foot, so sturdy footwear, and torches for night-time are advised.
