About this property

Girvan 15.1 miles. Mountain Hall View is a stunning, detached property residing in a countryside location just above the village of Ballantrae. With easy access to the idyllic shores of the Ayrshire coast, this charming retreat welcomes families eager to explore some of South Scotland’s finest areas. The property dates back 200 years and has been thoughtfully and tastefully modernised throughout by the owner. The cottage exudes plenty of character and charm, while the amenities of the modern extension provide a contemporary style of living. The focal point of the property is the substantial open-plan living area, where you can take a seat in the lofted sitting area, take advantage of the integrated kitchen appliances and whip up something special, or carry the conversation to the dinner table where you can toast to a superb getaway. The quality of Mountain View is really emphasised here, complete with wooden flooring, floor-to-ceiling windows, and patio doors that open onto a glass balustrade. Moving back through the interior, the first floor occupies the master bedroom, fitted with a double bed and en-suite shower room, along with a private balcony where you can step out and admire the tranquil location. The original part of the house can be found at the other end, hosting two double bedrooms and a second sitting room. The first bedroom rests on the ground-floor and enjoys jack-and-jill access to a shower room, while the second can be found up a private staircase, with the bedroom and shower room at either end of the landing. Spend mornings out on the sloped garden, or discover the farmland surrounding the property, with many acres of open countryside offering a delightful backdrop to your walks. The little village of Ballantrae offers a convenience store if you require any essentials, as well as a coffee shop, gift shop and farm shop to source some local produce. The magnificent nearby Glenapp Castle offers luxurious 5 star dining, set amongst impressive gardens. Fishers can spend their time casting away in the River Stinchar, while those keen gardeners must visit the Logan Botanical Gardens with its exotic range of plants and trees. Head to the Mull of Halloway Lighthouse and be rewarded with mesmerising views of Scotland, Ireland and the Isle of Man, while looking out for the diving porpoises and dolphins. The Irish ferry post is just a 20 minute drive away. Further afield you can hop on a train to Glasgow or jump in the car and drive to the mesmerising Galloway Park where you can enjoy breathtaking hikes and spot incredible landmarks, such as the Grey Man of the Merrick and Bruce’s Stone. Mountain Hall View ticks all the boxes for a spectacular family retreat, any time of year. EPC Rating: Band G

The Girvan Folk Music Festival takes place every year and draws a large crowd, with Girvan also hosting a folk music club. However I feel it could be so much more. Overall we couldn’t have asked for a more tranquil setting. As mentioned on previous reviews the downstairs toilet is rather overpowering at times, I understand this may be a drain problem. The beds do move around on the wooden floor which makes for an interrupted nights sleep, a simple solution would be some kind of rubber castors on the wheels. After the long journey I was looking forward to a nice relaxing bath but unfortunately the plug in the only bath does not work as it doesn’t stay down, an easy and inexpensive repair . Overall we had a fabulous week at Mountain Hall View . A day trip to Belfast from Cairnryan was an extra bonus and would highly recommend to other guests. Breathtaking scenery and some great walks to be had.

Yes there were some things that could be ‘better’, but we had plenty of room, the cottage was clean (not sparkling but clean enough for us to live in) and there was plenty to do in the area. There was a nasty drain smell in the utility room, but we bought some drain cleaner and it was sorted.

No information pack or welcome pack left. Poor quality toilet seats and no toilet roll holders. Water not hot on arrival had to search out boiler manual at end of a long journey. Beds move on wooden floor and come apart in night. Bedheads made of fabric feel unhygienic. Crumbs in cupboards and fridge so less spotlessly clean than would hope . The remote location really would benefit from the owner leaving maybe some information on local walks - we tried to find this but the only two places nearby were both out of stock. This is a nice house but it feels a bit unwelcoming
