Staying at Riof Ocean Cottage is a decision very well made; you have discovered a truly special place. The cottage is situated beside Reef Bay near Uig on the west coast of the Isle of Lewis. It is sheltered from the prevailing weather, so you will have lots of wildlife for company enjoying a respite from the turbulent waters of the North Atlantic only a short distance away.

The cottage itself is detached and has an enclosed plot right beside the water of the bay. Before entering the property, you are mesmerised by the setting you have for your holiday. Going onto the deck and into the property is all wheelchair accessible, and so too is the entire property. Enter into the hallway and to your right there is the very comfortable double bedroom. Next to this is the bunk bed room, which hosts possibly the most comfortable bunk bed every built. There is a large wet room suitable for disabled guests, with level entry and grab rails at the shower, toilet and sink. The living/kitchen/dining room is a superb space that you’ll enjoy spending most of your time in. There is a well equipped kitchen, spacious dining space and comfortable sitting area with a Smart TV that has Sky packages and an excellent wood burner taking centre stage. It’s a double aspect room looking out to the sea.

Within a few minutes’ walk you can be strolling along the sandy Reef Beach, then a little further away are the jaw-dropping sands at Uig, along with the tiny sandy cove of Mangersta Beach. There is a lot said about the beaches further south on the island of Harris, but here in the far west of Lewis, a secret has been kept and the beaches in fact rival anything you’ve ever seen anywhere in the world. They are totally outstanding. A little inland there are the rugged Uig hills to explore on foot. They rise up near to Riof Bay and are outliers of the North Harris hills. Up the west coast you can explore the picturesque black house village at Gearrannan and all the way as far north as you can go is Stevenson’s Butt of Lewis lighthouse (officially the windiest spot in the United Kingdom!).

Stornoway is a nice small town and a useful centre to visit. And remember that the Isle of Harris is connected to Lewis, they are in fact one island with the North Harris mountains the only barrier. The road to Harris is worth taking, and exploring Harris will be very rewarding day out. You could spend a week at Riof Ocean Cottage without getting back into your car, but using it now and again during your holiday is a must. Several miles away you can stroll around the world-famous Callanish Standing Stones, an other-worldly experience. Go early in the morning and have them all to yourself. It’s honestly a struggle to think of any place better for a holiday. The Outer Hebrides, the Isle of Lewis, Riof Ocean Cottage deliver on all fronts. You will visit for a week, and want to stay for two and book again to return; it’s a truly magical place. Beach 1 mile. Shop 5 miles, pub 33 miles and restaurant 5 miles.
