Holt, a village on the Welsh/English border, was established in 1282 on the banks of the River Dee, 10 miles from Chester. For centuries, the Holt Bridge served as a significant crossing point between Wales and England at Farndon. A door of the majestic St. Chad's Church has the scars of musket fire, a remnant of the many battles fought here. Holt is an attractive community because of its small village green, its local taverns and stores, and the ruins of Holt Castle, which were built in 1284. Farndon, the English village on the other side of the river, is a great place to visit if you're looking for some great souvenirs and a friendly place to unwind with your loved ones. The Roman city of Chester is home to a renowned shopping district known as The Rows, a prestigious zoo, and a lively racetrack. Snowdonia National Park is only a couple of hours away, making it a great day trip destination for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts. Holt serves as an excellent home base from which to explore the rest of this breathtaking and fascinating area.

It’s a 5 minute walk from the shops, cafes and restaurants in Holt including a great farm shop and a 15 minute walk to the equally beautiful Farndon with chemist, excellent butcher, florist, more cafes and two great pubs with food, both very different in style and atmosphere. In addition, it’s on the bus route from Wrexham to Chester so we didn’t use the car at all for the first week we were here. The cottage itself isn’t perfect but it’s pretty good. The place was spotlessly clean and equipped with all the essentials for a good stay. There is a good supply of cookware, all of it clean and in excellent condition, although only basic utensils. There’s plenty of light downstairs although no privacy with the blinds open because of the huge glassed area. The bed was comfortable and we slept well here and there was plenty of hot water and very good towels. On the downside, taps in the kitchen were very difficult to turn off and the shower is a little short of elbow room and places to put things. Having said that, after our first week we rebooked for another two weeks. Recommended.

Sandra & Alan have worked hard to make it a comfortable little ‘bolt hole’. It’s immaculate and has everything you need for a relaxed break. We have just spent a couple days here and enjoyed our break immensely. Thoroughly recommend this property.
