About this property

Nestled in a fabulous, elevated location overlooking the rest of Wirksworth, Derbyshire is Hog Cottage. This characterful, stone-built cottage offers guests a wonderful setting close to local amenities and the adventure-filled Peak District National Park as well as a welcoming interior adorned with characterful features like exposed beams and stone work completed with two well-appointed bedrooms; the perfect setting for friends, families or couples looking to explore the wonders of Derbyshire with two of their beloved canine companions. Cross the threshold into your new home-from-home and step through into the sitting room which is undoubtedly the heart of the home thanks to the warming gas fire and plush seating. Unwind here in front of the Smart TV before heading into the fully-equipped kitchen/diner to rustle up a hearty meal that the whole family can enjoy around the spacious dining table. On sunny days, why not step outside to the private, front patio where you can fire up the barbecue and admire the sun setting over the town; the perfect place to raise a toast to your well-earned retreat. When the evening draws to a close, head upstairs to wash off the day’s adventures in the bathroom before retiring to either of the king-size bedrooms, one of which boasts a handy zip/link feature. During the day head into the heart of Wirksworth where you can stock up on all your self-catering essentials or, on the night’s when you don’t fancy cooking, enjoy a delicious meal at the Hope and Anchor or the Le Mistral. The town is also home to the Wirksworth Heritage Centre, The National Stone Centre and Stoney Wood where guests can amble through the countryside. Keen ramblers can also venture into the nearby Peak District National Park where you can try your hand at more difficult trails including Eyam Moor, Jacob’s Ladder and Kinder Scout which all offer breath-taking views over the English countryside. Also ideal for families, with a days adventure cycling on the High Peak Trail, with bike hire available from Middleton Top. Carsington Water is just a short drive away and you will find a wide variety of water activities from Canoeing, Paddle Boarding and Sailing with specific tuition dedicated to families. In Mattock you will find some great attractions which will appeal to children, including a ride on the cable cars at The Heights of Abram, Matlock Farm Park and Little Monkeys Play Center. The charming towns and villages of Matlock, Ashbourne and Bakewell are also easily accessible housing a myriad of other attractions; there's truly something for everyone! Make memories at Hog Cottage!

Located on the outskirts of the Peak District and only a few miles from Matlock, Wirksworth is a small but charming market town. In addition to its magnificent parish church, Wirksworth is home to many other historic and architecturally significant buildings that add to the town's unique personality. The deli, butcher, and baker all have a strong local food ethic, and they coexist with independent shops. The ancient "jitties" and courtyards of the Puzzle Gardens, the Heritage Centre, and the beautiful nearby countryside (including Carsington Water, Black Rocks, and the High Peak Trail) are all popular tourist attractions. The walking and rock climbing here are superb, and cyclists of all skill levels will appreciate the area's roads. Wirksworth celebrates the Derbyshire custom of "Well Dressing" alongside a lively carnival every May. Every year in September, the city hosts an annual Arts festival that features an incredible Art & Architecture Trail showcasing modern art and a wide range of international performers. There is a lot to do, from watching a film at an independent art deco theatre to sampling the cuisine at one of the many restaurants. The Eco Centre, the National Stone Centre, and the Mount Cook Adventure Centre are just some of the recreational facilities available in town. Produce and handiwork from the area are available at the weekly market and the monthly farmers' market. Matlock Bath, with its spectacular cable car, the historic Ecclesbourne Valley Railway, and Gulliver's Kingdom are all within driving distance. The Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site in nearby Cromford is well worth the short trip. Wirksworth is a fantastic destination for a trip full of different experiences.

The rooms were all very comfortable, lovely sitting room and great sized dining table. We enjoyed the welcome basket for humans and dog! Although we noted the accessibility comments and are used to steep inclines, we weren't expecting it to be quite such a steep climb up to the cottage, which could be an issue for some visitors. Lots to do and in the area.

The bedrooms and lounge were lovely and relaxing (Though the tv has limited channels if you wanna watch tv) I do feel the bathroom and kitchen are a little tired but still functional. It’s a gorgeous property just needs some tlc

Access was alot steeper than the description + turning a vehicle around with lots of cars parked would be challenging with a big car.
