Relics of lead mining can still be found in the town of Allendale, which was once a bustling hub of the industry. To the west lies Carlisle, the Lake District, Hexham, Newcastle, and Durham; to the east is Hexham, Newcastle and Durham; and to the north is the Hadrian's Wall. The North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is a great starting point for exploring the surrounding countryside or heading north to the stunning Heritage Coastline. There are numerous walking and cycling trails in the area. Tar Bar'ls, a New Year's Eve event in Allendale, is well worth witnessing, as is the Allen Valleys Folk Festival, which takes place in the fall. Allendale is also a popular rest stop for cyclists completing the Coast to Coast race.

It was well located for our visit to Hadrians Wall and especially the Vindolanda Roman Fort & Viccus. We ' d had to cancel a visit to the site as last year it coincided with the death of Queen Elizabeth I of Scotland. Lots of visitor sites were thrown out of kilter. A year later we were able to fulfil our ambition to see it. The cottage is not only convenient but set in tranquil and remote setting well away from the World. It's a very appealing location yet we were easily able to drive out to Vindolanda , Bamburgh Castle and Lindisfarne too. Since it was just us two the property was perfectly suitable for our needs. We enjoyed the upside down layout ( the en suite bedroom is on GF whilst the living room with open plan kitchen was on first ). The finishes were all to a good standard and the construction was just wonderfully reassuringly solid. We found our way round the cooking facilities and got familiar with the open fire ( which I particularly enjoyed ). Everything was absolutely fine and having stayed in lots of cottages and quite a few Sykes cottages ( I think this was about 14th of Sykes never mind others rented independently ) would highly recommend. The only negative was the bathroom. Don't get me wrong it was totally functional but the hand held shower and just general lack of a proper shower is a drawback. Sure there's a perfectly good bath and the other bathroom suite items are fine but in my opinion you really need an actual wet room. The hand held shower is just too basic and unnecessarily messy. Water ends up going everywhere despite your best efforts. It also made the floor get wet and those ceramic tiles became very very slippy. Sorry about that but I suspect others have thought it ( but sometimes don't want to express it. )

Warm and well resourced for all our needs. The surrounding area is just beautiful and we loved that you could cycle or walk straight from the door.
