The Dordogne valley views are glorious from this characterful bolthole which has been built into the ramparts of one of France’s ‘Plus Beaux Villages’. How wonderful to be able to stroll out to charming restaurants, cafes and little shops yet also be so close to many wonderful sights of the Périgord Noir.
The top-floor king-size bedroom, with its own en suite shower room, is the most romantic spot to appreciate the lovely landscapes as you sit and gaze out your window with a coffee in hand. There are more pretty views from the living area, a delightful open-plan spot with exposed stone walls juxtaposing comfortable sofas, a dining table and perfectly equipped kitchen.
On warm days and evenings, spend time in your courtyard where you can serve delicious meals al-fresco on the table and chairs by the barbecue, perhaps prepared using seasonal ingredients picked up from local markets. Indeed, on a Saturday morning you only need to wander into the heart of this historic town for its colourful market selling locally produced delights and artisan crafts. Then there’s the vibrant weekly night markets in the height of the summer, a joy to experience as you dine amongst locals in the picturesque main square.
Other historic gems of this region include Monpazier and Issigeac, both with beautiful architecture and atmospheric markets whilst the riverside villages of Domme, La Roque-Gageac and Beynac-et-Cazenac are also easily reached, as are so many of the Dordogne’s grand châteaux and gardens.
Sarlat-la-Canéda is a superb day out, as is Bergerac with its surrounding vineyards and wineries. That said, you may simply prefer to head to the Dordogne River for picture-perfect picnics, long walks or canoeing, all ideal ways to admire the idyllic scenery around you.
Maison du Castrum is built into the historic ramparts of a small medieval town around a ten-minute drive south of Siorac-en-Périgord and the Dordogne river, perfectly located for exploring some of the most famous sights of the glorious Périgord Noir.
You can walk to everything within this charming medieval town, classified as one of France’s ‘Plus Beaux Villages’. Explore the cobbled lanes and admire pretty shops, inviting restaurants and lively cafes. The main square is a hub of joyful activity, especially on a Saturday morning with its vibrant weekly market – you can also visit the troglodyte caves beneath the square. In July and August an atmospheric night market usually comes to town on a Wednesday evening, a great place to eat, drink and soak up the summer ambience.
Yet there is so much more of this mesmerising region to explore. Start off to the south in Monpazier (16km), yet another ‘Plus Beaux Village’ with its gorgeous architecture, excellent restaurants and beautiful main square where the Thursday morning market takes place. Crossing over to Lot-et-Garonne, Monflanquin (39km) is another picture-perfect bastide town with its pretty arcades whilst Dordogne’s Issigeac (42km) is much-loved for its wonderful Sunday morning market.
Heading north towards the Dordogne river, hire canoes or picnic by the river near Le-Buisson-de-Cadouin (15km), admire the beauty of Limeuil (18km) or drive to some of the region’s most iconic riverside villages such as Domme, La Roque-Gageac and Beynac-et-Cazenac, all within a 20 to 35-minute drive.
The pre-historic sites of the Vézère valley also await with the fascinating town of Les Eyzies only 24km away whilst famous Sarlat-la-Canéda (34km) is a must-visit for lovers of fine cuisine, historic architecture and fantastic markets.
Not forgetting some of the Dordogne’s most incredible châteaux from Château de Beynac and Château des Milandes within a 20-minute drive to Château de Fénelon around an hour by car. The glorious gardens of this region are another highlight – a visit to Les Jardins de Marqueyssac on a Thursday summer evening when it is beautifully lit up by candlelight is an experience not to be missed.
