On the northwestern side of the island, in the Chania region, is the village of Kokkino Horio. Situated on a hillside overlooking Souda Bay, it is known for its relatively quiet atmosphere. The name “Red Village” is generally attributed to the reddish soil found in the area. The village features narrow streets, traditional stone houses, and a small number of tavernas. It also offers views across the bay toward the White Mountains (Lefka Ori), which often remain snow-capped into spring.
Kokkino Horio was used as a filming location for the 1964 film Zorba the Greek, which has contributed to its recognition among visitors. Despite this, it has experienced less development compared to more tourist-oriented areas of Crete. It tends to attract visitors seeking a quieter environment. Nearby villages such as Plaka and Almyrida provide access to beaches while Kokkino Horio itself remains relatively undisturbed.
The surrounding area includes walking paths through olive groves and rocky terrain, with viewpoints and small chapels along the way. Close to the village is the Glassblowing Factory, where traditional glassmaking techniques are demonstrated.
